Small Three Axis Accelerometers
My brother suggested this, and it may be something that is useable.
Might actually give us a speed profile, and actual speed calculation.

Very interesting in concept.
The spec on the accelerometer says 18G's and I don't think that is enough, but maybe they could make or calibrate one to go higher.
I recall reading that record level flights were in the 70G range.

You can't directly calculate speed this way unless you know which way the accelerometer was pointed the whole time. I'm working on a unit that incorporates a 3-axis gyro to do that.
