NZ's Weldon

I think we have found our Weldon.

Just to the NW, at the Earth and Sky Observatory, they recorded NZ's strongest wind at 250kph.

It is about the same height as Weldon.

It has a big lake in front of it.

The wind funnels down a valley and across a flat expanse before hitting this ridge.

It is for WNW-NW winds

It is accessible!

It is about 2.5 hours drive from Christchurch.

Lots of similar stats to Weldon.

But whether is puts out speeds like Weldon, time will tell...

Interesting that the snow is only on one face of the hill! That makes it look very encouraging if a bit cold.

If you look in the middle of the valley, there is a nice 400 foot tall hump next to a pot farm that could be the ticket:

EDIT: it faces northeast. but the ridge between the powerline tower and the pot farm faces NW. at least there is no trees!

Windy Wellington

When the possibility of a NZ trip was posted I thought I'd have a look around on GE (as you do). Not ever having set foot into NZ I could only go from what I've heard and the name Windy Wellington came to mind. So this is what I thought looked a possibility. Weldon is ~180 meters AGL and this site is ~ 300 meters above ASL/AGL. The Tekapo hill has the same orientation so it's for a WNW wind.
Is it worth a look?
D.
Hope this works

Alex, That hill you found certainly has the 'windblown' look and shape. Do you know much about the road up there? Seems to be quite a few ridges with roads on top.

Good to see you searching more Alex. So much potential, can't wait to see what you find.

You should get Jonno and the Welly boys to check out that site Larrikin linked to. They are gung-ho for DS now

Yeah, it's kind of a shame there's a split between RCS and Parkflyers. I've often thought we'd be better off having an NZ thread here, like the Aussies with their Slope Trash thread.

I've asked on RCS if anyone's keen to try that Welly site. Waikato sucks for DS sites

Yes Waikato is very flat. Not many good ridges around the North Island

Probably no need to look at the site I posted. After seeing the weather web sites that Alex and Tim posted I had a look at the stats for Wellington ... very reliable northerlies but S.F.A. from the WNW.
Take a look by all means, it might be good for a freak wind one day.
Shame, coz the whole ridge looks the goods.
David.

Hey guys, I think access is the main problem with sites west and south of Wellington. I am always looking for places around lower north island but think the majority of the good DS sites have all been given to the south island. It nearly costs more to travel between the islands than it does to Australia, so a trip focused down south sounds like a good plan.

I am pretty sure that site is on a farm called Terawhiti Station. I use to know one of the farmers and regularly rode my dirt bike on the farm back in the day. Now the farm is closed to the public and is covered in windmill power generators and I can not get access to the farm even through the old boys network to fly gliders or ride my bike. If you are coming to Wellington I can try again to get access just for one day.
