This is UltraBatics: The J-Flip Tail-First Takeoff (0 min 31 sec)

I was watching my seven year old son José Luis playing with a small EPP chuck glider version of the Le Fish that I'd made for him. He was goofing around and started trying to launch it tail-first, inverted. It actually worked! The plane did a half flip and then flew away forwards in normal upright flight.

I had to try it... and it works fine, with an ultralight aerobatics glider

Here I am performing it with my 17oz Le Fish. I'm calling the trick a J-Flip in honor of my son. Fun!

The firts time I've seen this type of launch was when I arrived in Toulouse (south of France): Marcel Guwang was doing that with Minij and Voltij from Aeromod in 1999.
This guy is the creasiest guy I've ever seen with a glider, now he's making helico 3D acro...

Nice! I love the Voltij; it was my first aerobatics gliders and still one of my favorites. The MG05 airfoil he developed has been very influential and I still regard it highly. And of course the French have been a huge inspiration for the renaissance in the US slope aerobatics movement. Individual French pilots and designers have reached out to me and others in our movement and graciously share their time, knowledge and experience and overall I love the engagement of our pilots and our cultures around our shared passion for aerobatics.

I have no pretense to being the first to do this trick; I assume it has been done by many people all over the world for many years now.

You folk's made my morning. One of my grandson's liked launching his MPX Fox chuck tail first. I wanted to send him another one recently but it seem's they're not mfg. anymore.

It's Ellwood Mesa, actually in Goleta about 12mi west of downtown Santa Barbara. You're welcome to come visit any time, I can lend you a light plane if you need one

It *might* work to launch your Rodent that way, so long as you've got 200-300 feet vertical to recover

YES, BUT....

A company called NINCO AIR are selling, at least in Spain, a very good little foamy, chuck glider. Span 55 cms. (21 1/2"), which flys very well, free-flight, at 30 gms. AUW, that I have been "moved" to steel one from my grandson, cram it full of mini-micro servos (3) and a 3.7v. lipo battery and receiver and, with an AUW (now) of 128 grs., it will be interesting to see how it flies. If it goes well, but like a dingbat - the most likely possibility - I will try to find some super lightweight cheapo servos and receiver. Right now, with an 8 channel graupner synthesised rx and 1.5kgs/cm servos, it is a slight case of over-kill. Anyone any ideas as to how to get full, two-servo, aileron/flaperon out of a three or four channel rx? ( I have Futaba 6X(?) and Cockpit SX Transmitters).

Sorry if a bit OT, but the "Fox" mention was also, was it not?

That was my first thought as well... horizontal line to a half flip to a horizontal tail slide! Woo Hoo!

My second thought was a "José Launch" in the yaw axis.

That was pretty cool. I'd like to try with a (friend's) F3f plane at the next outing!
