dyson. had the same one for 8 years now. still works like new. not even one problem. never gotten clogged. sure they are a tad spendy but youll never have to buy another one. the handle is a softer plastic so it wont shatter. i just flexes. they have done some seriously extensive testing on these. my suggestion is get the ball version. i wish i had. its a bit more maneuverable than the one i have. i think its less $$ also. mine was the top of the line model but its so worth the money. they just work and work and work and never fail. my wife is allergic to pet dander. we have a dog and a cat. vacuum every 2 days. never an issue for her. they pick up everything. lifetime warranty i believe. thats how confident they are in the product. go check them out.

I second the Dyson. Better than anything else I've tried, even a Rainbow... Gave away the Orek after getting the Animal years ago...

+1 on the Dyson. We're going on about 5 years with the DC07 animal and our pups blow out their coats twice a year and it still works great.

Gee, we are waiting for the old Electrolux to give up after 20-odd years, and it was bought second-hand! I'm not sure that we will ever have to buy another one; overhaul this one, maybe...

If you can wait, check woot daily, they sometimes have Dysons for a great price.

Had our Dyson for 7 years now. I thought my wife was off her rocker when she bought it, but man does that thing work well.

You have to take the cyclone chamber apart and clean it occasionally, the dirt and dust gets stuck on the plastic.

Flogging a Dyson about 8 years too. Loaned it out once to my sister-in-law, now I hold the handle to the unit with a strap of Velcro. :-(

If you want one that will last you the rest of your life see if you have a Kirby dealer in your area. I had one that my grand parents bought in the 40's and used it into the 80's. Biggest mistake I ever made giving it up. The design hasn't changed much but it does clean better than anything I've had since, even the Dyson. I didn't think they were available anymore until recently. The damn think will even spray paint.
