Hangar 9 Katana or YT Adrenaline?

Hi folks,

I'm over in the UK but was after some advice from you.

I'm buying my first 3D plane and I'm almost sure I'm going to go with a Hangar 9 Katana. I really wanted the Showtime 50 but unfortunately that isn't available any more. At the minute I already have a .45 engine which I know is a bit small but it won't be a big job to upgrade later when I've a few more s to a .55.

My dilemma is that the guy in the shop has a YT International Adrenaline 120 which when I add the servos etc to the H9 works out at the same price (280). It has flown about 10 gallons of fuel as is as new. The problem then would be that I don't have an engine for it and it will cost an extra 200 (he has a big 4 stroke) which nearly doubles my budget. I just really love the colour scheme though that throws up another question and that is spare parts which are easy to get for H9 products.

What I really want to know is would I have as much fun learning 3D and general aerobatic flying with the cheaper option? Is it possible to learn prop hanging etc with a .45?

Thanks

Stevie

problem is most regular 40 size planes do not 3D well.
The H9 stuff are lumberwagons
One plane comes to mind is the goldwing nitro yak or MX.
When comes to 3D wing loading is everything.
otherwise it will snap when you pull hard on the elevator.

I would stay away from H9 if you are going for 3d... Stick with 3dhs or extreme flight in the states...

Well 3DHS doesn't have a 40 size nitro but Goldwing does.

Stevie,
I have the H9 Katana 50 with a saito 72 up front and it's not enough motor for the plane.. It's fun and all and flys well, but a bigger motor would be better for 3D..
Mine will just hover with the 72 and fall off if i have to put in to much stick input. Other moves are great with the plane set up, but mine will get a bigger motor this winter.. So I don't think you will be to happy with a 45 up front...

My buddy picked up a used Funtana I think it's a 90 or 120 size and put a DLE20 on a tuned pipe up front, it's 10 pounds 3oz dry and OH MY!! What a great combo, he can do what ever he wants and has power to spare... I have been looking for a airframe to put a DLE20 in as well, very impressed with his and now I have to have one....

Thanks for the replies. We are in the process of the build - in fact almost finished. Just need to sort out the motor tomorrow and fit the fuel tank and receiver then set it up. Can't wait! To be honest by the time I got the plane finished I'd spent the price of the Adrenaline but I'm still happy with my purchase.

Thanks

Stevie,
make sure you use good servos on your ail. , I almost lost mine at our fun fly Saturday...

We had a lot of crosswind, 20+ but the Katana flew great in it.. On my second flight I was coming across the runway and was going to do a low snaproll in front of the crowd when me and my spotter seen it, Flutter! Both ail. were fluttering really bad. I cut power and turned to base and final real quick..lol

Upon inspection, there was play in both servos in the wing.. I was using Futaba 3152's and they had about 40 flights on them between the Katana and a GP Reactor last year... I don't fly my planes too hard and thought that they would be fine, I was wrong.. heading to the LHS to set a pair of new servos...

Thanks Jimbo,

I used Spektrum A6060 digital servos for the ailerons as suggested with the plane and they haven't been used yet. Only got the plane finished today but haven't had a chance to fly it yet but I'll let you know how I get on.

Thanks

Stevie

I've been flying the H9 Katana 50 for a few months now and it's my favorite plane. It flies much larger than it is. I'm running a Turnigy electric motor at about 17-1800 watts and this plane flies 3D great. AUW is 6.6 lbs on 6s 3000mah and 7.1lbs on 4000mah battery. You will love this plane.

+1 to what Jimbo says about not skimping on servos.

A few other tips for reducingf flutter are keeping hinge gaps tight, sealing the gaps, minimizing control surface play by using quality HW and a good setup, and staying within the design specs of you airframe and servos.
