The 1608 is a good idea for a beginner like me. I'm going to need an upgrade soon so depending on when this comes out, I might be interested.

The release for everything really is dependent on the code. Reformatting the hardware is a pretty simple matter.

I have been spending all of my time getting the RFU and Expander coding finished. This means support for various other types of hardware (Spektrum, S-BUS, SLRX, etc.)

I know u r a smart guy but that is brilliant to get the new telemetry enabled receivers out first to support the XPS 3216.

Dr X, i have been following that link as well. I have many planes with the frsky radio system not heli's as their link is not as good as XPS's. Also their add indicates the same time frame as Jim's, Some Time in 2013!
I will also change my frysky receivers in all of my gliders, (because of the xmitter modual complaing that its partially out of range when it should not) with the new telemetry receivers Jim is working on. (i need to have voltage indicators to get the max air time.)

Low-end transmitter using the HobbyKing case has been scrapped. Their final pricing was way too high compared to the 32 channel transmitter case!

Can you still do a lower end tx using the case you currently have?

the low-end Tx case will be the A9 with the motherboard (although somehow it ends up a total cost greater than the XPS3216 )

I am still looking. I found some really inexpensive low-end cases, but they don't have displays... and I think that is something that is required. Even the 9XR has a display, and they are cheaper retail than what HobbyKing was trying to sell us just the orange Tx case and gimbals for!

They're probably inflating the cost because they know you'll be a major competitor at the price you're trying to go for. I'm hoping you can find something for all of us that want to support a US company without breaking the bank.

How much cheaper would a low-end Tx need to be to make it worthwhile? The planned 3216 offers so much value for such a good price already. I liked the idea thrown around sometime back about a higher end version of the 3216 with fancy hi-rez color touch screen

My preference at the moment of course is to forget about anything other than getting the new Rx stuff and 3216 released

Honestly Jim, why would you want to bother with that? You're going to wind up with a bunch of whining about the ergonomics, gimball feel, switches snapping off and the list goes on and on. Plus you'll have to stock a bunch of repair parts and deal with servicing as well. IMO, just make the budget option the board replacement for a few select radios. How much cheaper do people want to go anyway...
