Cant seem to find any info on this. Just replaced the 70mm ducted fan unit, motor and ESC in a hobby lobby thrust vectoring F16. There seems to be a little vibration at midrange on the new fan. Should I balance it? To do that do I balance the same way as on a propeller? How do you add/subtract weight without weakening the fan?

I have built a few EDF's and found any noticeable imbalance will cause the destruction of your fan/shroud eventually. Here's a link to the method I use (clock method).

Thats just what I needed, thanks!!

Sometimes you can simply loosen the fan bolt and turn the fan blade a fuzz on the adapter to a new position and get it into the sweet spot after a couple tries.

Use a normal magnetic balancer. I use aluminum tape strips on the inside of the hub. Cut them in 1/4" strips the depth of the impeller. Once you get that close test it and see how it sounds. You may have to balance the spinner as well(if your fan has one). I use the balancer as well. But Ill use a touch of silicone on the spinner to balance it instead of the tape. Once you do both of these, check it and see how it sounds. After this if you still hear a bad harmonic you can do as Apex suggests and spin the fan on the shaft 10-20 degrees and check the sound. There are some very nice sounding fans out there that have been balanced using this method.
