I have a several year old Optic6 72hz that has served me well. I have been thinking if moving to 2.4 radio. The two options I am considering are getting a Assan x8 module to convert or totally new Turnigy radio with the 2.4 ( if they are ever in stock). Any thoughts as to the better way to go? I don't care about backward compatibility.

For what it's worth, I've used the FrSky module in both the Hitec and Futaba transmitters with excellent results. Do not remember for sure but believe the cost for both the transmitter module and one receiver (full range dual antenna) was less than $50. Additional receivers are less than $30 each.

I have used Fly Dream DIY 2.4 units in two different Transmitters and both the FlYdream and FrSky 2.4 modules in several others one being a Hi tec Eclipse. I have been extremly well pleased with these.

As long as the Transmitter has the functions you need then their is really no reason to do anything other than convert to 2.4. It is really more of a mater of finding one with the feactures you need / desire.

Optic 6 is usually a well made reliable radio and are dead easy to convert to 2.4ghz,if it has the programming capability that fits your need i'd say spend 50 bucks and bingo.You're already familiar on how to use it.I've owned one for a long time and it has served me well,it's now my backup i am on an A9 now.The FrSky system sounds viable as many people on here say they work good and cheaper Rx's sounds like a winner to me .

Either get a Hitec 2.4 module for your optic 6. The Hitec module system gets great reports.

Or go to the FrSky system from www.alofthobies.com or www.hobbyking.com as these are also getting rave reviews.

The FrSky receivers about 30% to 50% lower price compared to the Hitec receivers.

If you like the Optic 6, you can stay with it.
