Build Log
1/18th scale 787 build

Hey guys,
This is going to be a build log of my 1/18th scale, edf Boeing 787. I'm currently working off of the 1/144th scale Revell plastic scale model which in itself is a very good reference. I'm looking to have the model laser digitized sometime during the week but until then I'm messing around with a few methods to get some workable crossections. This is going to be a relatively slow build but in the end I should have a very nice model to fly.

Hey Demondriver,
I'm a fan of your work! Yeah I think the 787 is just begging to be modeled with that wingspan. I like the Windrider version and all, but it's just too small lol.

LOL thank you sir, from what I've seen of your awesome 777 that's a well received compliment, that's a beautiful bird you have.

Okay guys today was a good day, the Revell model has been sent off for laser scanning; bad news is that it will be considered a lower tier priority in order to keep pricing down so I probably won't see anything for like a month ..........but I'm sure it will be worth it. Till then I'm going to concentrate on my materials and equipment selection so hopefully I can stay busy .... hopefully lol.

In case you don't have it, here is the link to Boeing's airport planning CAD files that contain 3-views DXF/DWG files.

Hey Eaticus,
Thank you I got those 3 views, I actually sent the file along with the model so they can align the cross sections.

Hey F&T are those Change Sun EDFs on your 777...if they are how do you like their performance...I'm looking at either their 90mm or 120mm12 blade units for the 787.

yup, the 75$ X-flight combo with the 1600kv motor I loooove the performance, it cruises around happily at 1/3rd of the throttle.

Okay here's an update on what I'm thinking so far:

Currently at my chosen scale (1/18th) I'm looking at a length of around 10 ft for my fuselage. This is going to be split into 3 transportable sections of 36 inches (tail section) 55.9 (center) and 28.5 inches (nose section) respectively for a total length of 120.4 inches. The reason I split it like this is that in the real aircraft there are actual seam lines at these points which would help in keeping things a bit cleaner as far as looks go.

The nose and tail sections as well as the belly fairing will be molded fiberglass (or carbon depending on the state of my pocket at that time ) with a foam core. The center section will be blue/pink foam hotwire cut with glassed in and outer surfaces. I want to experiment to see exactly how thin I can make the walls without compromising strength; I'm thinking maybe that a 3/8ths or 1/2 inch wall should suffice with the right material/structural reinforcement.

As far as the wings go ....... I have GOT!!! to have that awesome flex. I don't think I could even call it a scale model without it. What I do know is that I'm going to build it in 3 pieces for easier transport. I'm toying with the idea of using depron to build it just like the real structure (like airbuzz) and maybe utilizing carbon fiber as a reinforcement.

Once I receive the cross sections I'll be able to see which size EDF unit will best fit my requirement, I like the Changesun 120mm 12 blade unit but the jury is still out. Well that's what I have so far let me know what you think.

very cool project!

Have you consider building it at 1/24th scale?

GENx Fan is 111" diameter and RR Trent 1000 fan is 112" dia at 1/18th scale it would be a fan diameter of 157mm (6.16").

At 1/24th scale, the scaled fan diameter would be 117mm (that is pretty close to 120mm).

Nah...you wont dissappoint me. I have been working on one for darn near 6 years now, and finally have something that looks like an airliner. It is also nearly 10 feet long. It is a 727-200 (1/16) SCALE. I am doing a cargo version, but have elected to go turbine instead of EDF with a single power unit in the tail. Maybe this weekend II will assemble it and get some pics.
