Cool
Smoke systems for EDF

Was excited to stumble upon this new product. I wonder how much the smoke oil weighs for a few passes worth of smoke?

Ad bug oil and do the field while you're at it please! Cool stuff, the first thing I thought of was a rechargeable electric bug fogger, I'd think it'd be stretched thin in a jet application though.

Yeah it's definitely not for a small model but it would work in a larger EDF. Land without the smoke oil and the weight penalty won't be that bad.

This is cool! Now for my pondering mind. Seems pretty heavy for the big system considering a 6s pack weight, 5 ounces of oil per minute weight and 17.2 ounces of system weight plus tank and tubing weight.

The thing about smoke in turbine jets, if that's anything to compare it to, is simply stated, the more smoke the better. Not enough smoke means a lot of weight for a wisp that can't be seen. Typically turbine smokers run through at least 16 ounces a minute, and more for show smokers. But that's for the type of smoke that you see where people start to really notice it. I'm not talking about the guys that over do it on the runway and on low passes - for smoke to be seen in flight and at speed it has to be thick.

Also, consider that even slimer guys and turbine guys consider smoke systems to be really messy. The oil is enough but the smoke is still oily and get's all over the jet eventually in a slimy mist. Some electric guys might be really turned off from that and the others may start flying ICDF once they realize they missed their calling in slime

But I am very interested in this myself. For an airplane that can hack the extra weight, it would be really cool to see it be done. I'd want to set it up modularity - so it could be removed "easily" in the field so it would not have to lugged around for every flight considering the weight and mess. One smoke flight per day would probably be fun - how about a time share smoke setup among several buddies !

Saw the video-

- static it looks like a lot of smoke but its not flying.

I think at flying speed its going to be spread thin A Jet id need to see to believe.

Really cool if it works but I bet you wont see much at flying speeds.

Post a video of it on a flying airframe please.

Eddie,
Just a thought but If the edf motor housing was extended rearward the smoke tube could be attached in line with the motor. The oil remnants would minimized and the tube could also act as a heat sink.

Interesting ideas, brings up some questions too. Wherever it goes on the first EDF I'm sure the typical CG and accessibility factors will weigh in on how it all comes together. What do you say, are you gonna treat us to a build thread on your smoke installation???
