Martin Mars
I'm tossing around the Idea to make this my next construction article. She is made from blue foam and glass. with the pack I'm using I get about 5 min. of flight time. She is powered with speed 280's and can lift off the water as is but is a little small for lakes. ( She loves ponds )
My problem is do I enlarge it and make it powered with speed 400's for lake use? Is this the type of plane you would buy plans for? |

Speaking for myself, anyway, I'd more than likely buy a set of plans for a spd 400 seaplane.
In fact, I wish there were more designs for seaplanes for 400 speed. As for the construction method, it wouldn't matter to me what material you went with, as I'd be converting it to foam, anyway. Just love that foam & glass with WBPA! Any idea what you'd be selling the plans at? Would you be likely to comming up with other seaplanes in that size? Mike S. I've been working with Model Airplane News because they seem to not have as much of a problem with Fommies. I have no idea what they would want for the plans. Most of my designs are available through them. The PBM being the latest. It's glow power though.

I made a post in the "Waterplanes" forum about this thread of yours. I'm glad you posted it here, because too many either don't know, or don't visit the Waterplanes forum. (I put a link to this thread in my post.)
I've no idea how many others I might be speaking for, but as for myself, I think speed 400 is a great motor for multi's. Inexpensive and easy to work with. Big is GOOD! "Glow powered," well, *that* can be changed. As for foam, what can I say? There are quite a few who "turn their noses up" at the mention of foam, but ignorance *is* curable! Just take a look at some of the "how-to" post in the Foamies Forum. A lot to learn from, there. As for size, I onced asked just what the maximum practical limit was for building with foam. Below, is the picture that was posted as an answer to *that* question. I'll watch this thread and see what happens. And I'll take a look at the MAN plans list to see what else you've done. Hope this results in a new design being made available! ![]() Mike S. I think I'd be more interested in a kit than plans. Also, speed 400 would be a better size than 280's.

Sparks,
I like the smaller planes. If you produce plans, I would purchase a set. |

Maybe this will help?
Sparks,
I truely love your PBM Mariner. In fact, I am going to order your plans through MAN and do a conversion to the PBM to "E" power. I built a Mars and here is the thread if you haven't seen it yet. Not a true scale, but close enough (standoff scale). Flies like a dream on four Mag Mayhems reverse turn and 19 Sanyo 2400's. Sorry it's not a S400 version but Jim Young, one of the guys who posted on the thread, has thought about doing one in a S400 version as well. I think an S400 version would be welcomed and I would look forward to building a "smaller" version for the 10 footer is a bit big to just tote around to the field/lake. ![]() Hope this helps. Something Different
Sparks,
If you really want a challenge, design and build this amphib and I WILL by the plans and the kit if available. It's truely a one off. You know, this thread should be moved to the "waterplanes" forum. Perry Last edited by Rudderman98; Oct 26, 2003 at 11:07 PM. |

Perry or Sparks, where can I get the plans for Perrys 120" span Mars plane? It is a must have to build "one day"...
And that PBM Mariner, is Model Airplane News the place to get the plans for that model? Thanks for any information! // Fredrik Wergeland Sweden www.flyingmodels.org The Great Electric Motor Test |

Hah! Wondered when the SARO Princess would show up, JUST the thing for a bucketful of batteries and Speed 400s. Wow!!!
I have been following floatplanes/flyingboats for decades; most of my plastic model stash is limited to those, including a Stranraer and a Cant 501, both must-builds for 400s. The Stranraer is dear to my heart: I saw the last flight of (I think) the last Strannie, the one that now resides in the Hendon Museum. I will never, ever, forget that. I also lived in Victoria during the refit of all the Mars at Fairey Aviation in the 60s, and watched it fly by this summer for the firefight here in the interior of BC. I'm retiring soon, so I will get to use some of the helpful info on this site; thanks, guys! |

Go to the URL I posted with the picture of my Mars. Go to page 12,13,14, or 15 and you will see the name Ivan Pettigrew. I posted his email address on one of the pages. There, you will be able to get the plans from him directly. Email me directly at bnfernau@msn.com for more info on the Mars when you're ready to build her or for any other questions you might have. T. Lyttle, Yes. The Princess is a beaut isn't she? Give me about a year and I should have her flying if all works out well. But expect her to be around 120 inches in wingspan, and powered by 6 Mag Mayhem reverse turn motors on 24 cells. Still working the math. I might go smaller for S400's depending on funds and space.Perry |
