Question
NiCad or NiMh

I have a couple sets of car battery packs and there are no markings on either the cells or the packs. Is there a way to tell if I have NiCads or NiMh batteries?
Thanks

I don't think so.

Does that matter?

For proper charging, yes, as far as I have ever heard it does.

I thought they could be treated the same.
Same voltage.
What, different charge rate?

It's the way they finish the charge . Something that I don't really understand about delta peak. I guess you can ruin NiMh by overcharging and/or over heating at that point. Sorry I can't be more specific but I'm just not too technical at these things.

The voltage depression at the peak is smaller with NiMh than with NiCd. The charger on NiMh setting is more sensitive to detect the peak. It is safe to charge NiCd on Nimh setting. Charging NiMh on NiCd setting might (but not necessarily does) lead to overheating.

What size are they and approximately how old are they? Got a picture of the cells/pack?
Depending on the age, the size of the cells will give you a big hint if you cycle them and record the capacity. Nimh are going to have at least 2x the capacity of a similar-sized Nicad.
