TAM A-4 EDF Project

I thought it would be interesting to show a refurbish and over haul on a old Tam Jets A-4. This was a Turbine version, that with the help of "AirSally" we ended up modifying for EDF. New inlet cheeks for EDF were put on and ducting was made by AirSally.

This set up is using the XPS fan, Castle HV160 and TP 6500 12S 45C packs.

Took some video of the maiden flight, with Jeff Fassbinder doing the honors. Very solid performance. Only snag was a axle/wheel issue that I will document later.

A 4 Skyhawk from Tamjets (5 min 38 sec)

I decided to re-paint the A4 to something a bit different. First idea was to go with VT-24 shown here...with my brother who flew this for the Marine Corps back in the 1980's, but decided its the same training command scheme and wanted something a bit different.

Did some searching around and decided to re-paint this in the Navy Agressor SQD, Top Gun school scheme. A bit different and with a sinister style....if you know me, I dont keep anything ARF...and if its not Luftwaffe...is gotta be something dark.

So with the help of Todd Burley...we are going with this new scheme.

Yes...I know mine has the ECM hump....as was pointed out when I picked this scheme...but not going for true scale....this is just for fun and having a new paint scheme.

Nice looking scheme

That bird flys good, all Tams A4s fly good with the dynamax and xps your 18 lbs range. Go to the dr tam100 your 15 lbs same bird. I must admit I like it at the lower weight, especially in turns. Well Todd is bad ass with paint and prep.

About 250 ft

On takeoff don't try to roll into power, apply throttle faster than normal so you get rudder authority. Also, make sure cg is on the front carbon spar. With full flaps keep at least half throttle on. Make sure you have up trim mixed with full flaps as Tam tells you in the manual. Once you get it dialed in you can use some crow but keep the power until touch down almost 1/4 throttle flare and then back off power.

It looks really nice on touch down.

Good luck.

Jeff

Good advice on flying the TJ-A4. I'll only mention I don't gun the throttle on takeoff with my A-4, I smoothly increase power like I do with all my takeoffs. The nose wheel steering seems to work OK.

PS - Camo on A-4's looks nice And if you are worried about scale on the other model you were looking at, don't sweat it too much. Besides, that model you referenced has 2 seats anyway The camo birds did sometimes have the avionics hump in the aggressor role. Especially since the A-4M, the "sports car" version of the A-4, all had the "hump" though the windscreen glass is slightly different on the "M".
