How long to learn 3D?

Curious! How long did it take YOU to learn the crazy 3D flying? How much money did it take in parts for you TO learn 3D?

The crazy 3D stuffs - never stop learning. Cost - in the neighborhood of $10K+ conservatively. This hobby is expensive.

$140 for the mCPx, another $120 for the radio and maybe $100 in parts so far.

Me too! If I'm inverted, it wasn't me! My friend has been flying for @ 1 year and I can't hardly tell if he is right side up or what! I don't know if I would call it "3-D" or not though, It flips and flops so much it might just be luck that keeps it in the air.

I think I got to loops, flips and rolls (all basically the same thing) in about 6 months, then I stalled for a few years because I was scared of crashing.

Then I got an mCP-X and learnt inverted hovering and circuits in about a year.

I only fly a few batteries per week and do little or no sim practice - people who learn proper 3D do a lot more practice.

It took nearly $5000 to learn flips, rolls, loops, inverted hovering and a little inverted flight. I made a lot of mistakes in terms of maintenance which was responsible for most of the expense. I used 4*MCPx, 2*Genius CP, and 3*V120D02S. I started in June with the MCPx but just couldn't get anywhere with it and the Genius CP. Things only got moving in mid-November with the V120D02S. Now I am flying the MCPx and V120D02S, I still can't get the Genius to work properly.

Among the horrors I encountered were 3 smoked MCPx boards, 3 smoked Genius boards, and 6 smoked V120D02S boards. Most of which were due to poor maintenance on my part. Also, I did not understand the importance of the state of the motor and batteries then. Flips were easy but it took months on the SIM before I could do inverted hovering. The more time you spend on the SIM, the less expense you will have in real life. But still, flips are very unpredictable between different helis.

One of the local kids, who's now a sponsored pilot, would come into the shop during the day (no crowd) and would spent up to 6 hours flying the sim. He worn out two realflight transmitters.

Here he's about a year later. This is an old video when flybar was still raging.

While I appreciate the skill involved in flying 3d and that to some people its the holy grail as it were, it's not for me.
As to your question I don't think there will be a definiative answer to your question as different people take different times to learn.... for example my stepson (12yrs old) can fly the ass off my MSR much better than I can and he has had maybe a tenth of the stick time I have.

You will never learn 3D - it will take all your money and all your time and you still won't know it. That's the beauty of it - you will never exhaust everything you can learn. When you think you know all the moves, you probably don't, and you can invent new ones.

To learn the basic maneuvers it took me about a year of flying and maybe $1000 investment... but over the years, $10K is probably more accurate.

Been flying little over a year now. Can 3d on sim but not real thing yet. I want to get real good and smooth on basic flying first than will start 3d training. Even regular flying cost money lol.
