Introducing the XY8-EOSc Co-axial Quad-copter and camera mount

Introducing the XY8-EOSc Co-axial Quad-copter and Camera Mount
Hi everyone,

After much effort and many late nights I'd like to introduce you to the XY8-EOSc coaxial quad multi-rotor and camera mount. The XY8 frame is a design I've been working on since last October that combines the front (and rear) boom spacing of a Y3 tri-copter with the motor count of an X8 co-axial quad-copter thus giving a clear field of view for a wide angle camera lens and excellent motor-out capabilities (as was proven inadvertently in a recent flight). The EOSc (EOS compatible) camera mount has been in development since August, 2011 and the mount shown in the pictures is the sixth version to be built/flown/tested.

I'm offering the complete package for sale as a Ready-to-Fly unit complete with Mikrokopter flight control and GPS electronics, an Iftron wireless video system and a JR 9503 radio system. All of the details are listed below. One has been built for a customer in Texas (my good friend Emowillcox) and will ship this Monday.

My plan is to offer four units for sale at an introductory price of $9450.00 USD (shipped in the continental USA). If the four sell in a reasonable amount of time then I'll plan a production run of ten complete units and establish the business structure and insurance coverage before proceeding. The production rate will be limited in order to preserve my ability to provide excellent customer support.

The XY8-ESOc isn't a good beginner helicopter so I'd ask that potential buyers have at least one build and some RC helicopter flight experience before ordering. Please use this thread to ask any questions.

I also have an NEXc camera mount (Sony NEX to Panasonic GH2 range of cameras) planned that will be quite unique in a couple of ways plus it will be smaller/lighter and suitable for either an XY4 or XY8 helicopter.

Youtube channel with sample videos....more will be added in the coming days/weeks.....

I've considered making the gimbal for other frames, what did you have in mind?

What camera would you have flying on it?

Thanks,
Bart

Thank you!

Here's another video made with an early prototype of the frame/mount. This was a proof-of-concept package we did for a local golf course. Though we were short of footage in some spots due to seasonal weather we were happy with what we produced. The roll axis for the camera mount was still direct drive at that point and not satisfactory. It has since been changed over to gear drive with an external potentiometer to match the tilt axis.

interesting upper frame.
is it the angle of the pics, or is this not in a full X configuration.
More like a xwing fighter shape if you know what I am saying.

EDIT: I assume the shape is why you call it the XY?
looks good and I love the side battery mounts.

Let me know if you consider selling the bare top half.
ie no gimbal, electronics and DW landing gear.

Hi, the frame is a modified X quad layout. From the description above,

Quote:
The XY8 frame is a design I've been working on since last October that combines the front (and rear) boom spacing of a Y3 tri-copter with the motor count of an X8 co-axial quad-copter thus giving a clear field of view for a wide angle camera lens and excellent motor-out capabilities (as was proven inadvertently in a recent flight).
The layout is what allows the copter to fly aggressively with the camera pointed straight ahead without getting booms/motors in view of the camera.

If there is enough interest in the frame I may decide to make it available separate from the RTF package. The Droidworx landing gear allows any of the Photo Higher AV mounts to be used.

Also, I'll be completing a new build soon using the Hoverfly Pro flight control system.

Hi Gabtrac

I'm selling the complete RTF package for $9450. This is an introductory price.

This is professional grade equipment that should last a very long time if handled and cared for properly.

Thanks for the complement!

Hi Moti,

These are custom RTF packages that are going to be built to order. I design and manufacture the frames and camera mounts then assemble them with Mikrokopter electronics and the other components listed above.

I've developed this package and its many features as a result of my own activities flying multi-rotor helicopters for aerial photography and video. I think that anyone that buys one will be very pleased with its performance.

I'll be opening a shop soon so stay tuned! There's more to come!

Thanks,
Bart

For what it's worth, a lot of helicopters have to be carried by the arms because everything else is too fragile.

With my XY8-EOSc, I carry the whole enchilada (batteries, camera, helicopter/mount for a total of about 11.5 pounds) by the camera mount! I actually carry it like a briefcase, at my side as I walk.

I'll be adding demo videos soon showing things like how easy it is to carry, change and connect batteries, stow in the backseat of a compact car, swap out SD cards on the camera, etc. I'll also continue to demonstrate its flying qualities. One thing that I think will be helpful that I'm going to try to do is a two minute demo video. That is, two minutes of continuous video, unedited, unprocessed and unstabilized. Lots of helicopters can make 3 to 5 second clips if you do enough flights. I'll show a solid two minutes of smooth flying. There's already a video on my youtube channel of me flying in my backyard that is close to this but I hope to do even better.

Thanks for reading,
Bart
