Li-ion are like firecrackers, they can explode.

So do A123 if abused. They pop pretty violently, but no flames.

So I guess that would make bagged LiFe just about the safest, they might vent, but won't burn up doing it.

Metallic casing LiFe can explode violently as well. I know first hand. I had the pleasure of testing some cells made by Valence, a sister company to who I worked for, and we were able to get them to explode violently on several occasions. Oxygen isnt liberated with LiFe as it is with other LI chemistries, so fire is rare , but shrapnel from the metallic casing,and whatever secondary casing poses a good danger.

So yes, foil cased LiFe is about the safest. None of the chemistries are really less safe than the others as long as they are used within their limits and for the purpose they are designed for.

Any luck with getting it turned on yet? The manual says only use the special battery. Is the polarity reversed just because? Or is it correct?

Yes, I'm using a Nano-tech 2500mah 3S Lipo TX Pack, the Battery bay on the 9XR is massive, makes the Lipo look tiny.
One thing is that the balance lead on the Lipo is only just long enough to reach the port of the 9XR.

There is also a large piece of sticky back foam that came in a zippy bag with the 9XR (11cmx6.5cm & 5mm thick)

Ah, just worked out (read the manual) what the foam is for, it goes in the Battery bay to lift the battery & stop it from rattling around.

At least with Royal Mail their Fee is cheaper.

I do not think not having the circuit will save your model, voltage tends to go down very fast when the battery is nearly empty. Besides, with your voice warning you'd be landing well before that , would you not?

The default Low Battery Warning was set at '9v'.
My 9XR does appear to have been calibrated already!

Usually the protection IC manufacturers will only sell it to battery manufacturers and allow bulk purchases when only the complete package has been tested as safe. So the battery protection ICs are surprisingly difficult to get hold of. I've been through all this when I've been producing my own product as I was going to put a separate protection IC on the main board and use separate tag cells. However that would have required more testing to get CE approval, and thus make it more expensive.
