Schedule for the next few months in AZ

We will move forward with an ALES event on Jul-19th at Elliot Bowl. Sorry for the late announcement, but planning was delayed while we figured out where the July-19th and July-26th venues would be held.

Pilot's meeting at 7:00 AM. We will fly 4-rounds, and then as a group decide if a 5-round will be flown if the humidity is not too bad. 100-meter launch height (1-beep) on CAM. The conditions have been too good the last few months, and this will make it more challenging and not just a landing contest.

Try your best to support the PVSF group for the July-26th event as well.

Still looking for the "official" ALES round drop rule, and have not yet located this. We just want to be consistent with the league and other major contests. F3K in 2014 has (1) drop after 5 or more rounds flown, but ALES has nothing defined. Results listed for both no drops and (1) drop after 5 rounds flown. It only affected 1-5th place.

No Drop Results
1st Sean Plummer 4955
2nd Charlie Morris 4827
3rd Iain Glithero 3986
4th Lee Wolfe 3814
5th Scott Todd 3700
6th Randy West 3543
7th Jerry Bunger 3285
8th John Irwin 3203
9th Dan Vester 2840
10th Marty Goldfarb 2651
11th Vern Phoeis 2625

One Drop Results
1st Charlie Morris 4000
2nd Sean Plummer 3973
3rd Lee Wolfe 3814
4th Scott Todd 3700
5th Iain Glithero 3444
6th Randy West 3171
7th Jerry Bunger 3096
8th John Irwin 2942

There were several zero scores due to motor restarts to save off-field landings, one mid-air resulting in an off-field landing, and two damaged aircraft which caused withdrawal or other issues. Only one damaged model due to the wind conditions.
Wind was very variable with gusts up to 12mph, but otherwise a good day.

April 5th Contest Results

Conditions started out calm with nice lift, but a prevailing 6-8 mph wind combined with strong thermal suck produced many off field landings. The plane way out on the GM Proving Grounds was found with very minor damage as was the plane on the helicopter field. One of the big birds suffered major damage as it flew past the edge of vision and went in, and we did have a tree landing with very minor damage.

1st Charlie Morris - 4915 (Supra)
2nd Mike Roseberry - 4657
3rd Scott Todd - 4623
4th John Armstrong - 4106 (Supra)
5th Lee Wolfe - 3956 (2m Pulsar)
6th Randy West - 3946
7th Vern Phoels - 3880
8th Brad Juntunen - 3836 (Xplorer)
9th Steve Wilcox - 3665 (Radian)
10th Ed LaCroix - 3487 (3.2m Pulsar)
11th Ford Rollo - 3363
12th John Webb - 3010
13th Dan Vester - 2928
14th Jerry Bunger - 2925
15th Steve Willcox Jr - 2780 (Radian - FIRST in Junior division!)
16th Tim Logan - 2099
17th Iain Glithero - 1661
18th John Irwin - 902

May 3rd ALES Contest Results

Great weather with 3-4mph breezes, and we completed 5-rounds before the temps hit 90.

Programmed a few more of the Altis v4 controllers for dual ALES and F5J duty, and they worked extremely well showing us actual cut-off heights and when we cut-off in strong lift. There were several times when the cut-off height plus 10-seconds showed gains of 10-15 meters (strong lift at motor off).

In practicing for next week's F5J event, Sean probably had the record for lowest cut-off at ~40-meters. But we both quickly found out in several cases the low-level thermal did not maintain energy long enough to produce 10-minute flight times. Bailing out at low levels was frequent to find new lift (and we confirmed emergency power-up is a good feature to enable!)

The winner Scott, smartly stuck with ALES guidelines and flew to full 150-meter cut-offs and made all his times. Great landings Scott, and one DLG caliber low-level save to seal up the contest. Randy and Ed also flew solid rounds with only a 14-point spread between 2nd and 3rd.

1st Scott Todd - 4883.9
2nd Randy West - 4437.4
3rd Ed LaCroix - 4414.1
4th Vern Phoels - 3043.6
5th Lee Wolfe - 2933.9
6th Sean Plummer - 2513.0
7th Iain Glithero - 2227.5
8th Jerry Bunger - 1073.6

Great day today! Nice weather, low winds and a great crowd with no (major) carnage or loss of aircraft. We had one love tap between a Radian and a 3.2 Pulsar, and one run-away prop spinner assembly.

As a group we decided there would be 6-rounds with 1-drop. This is the first report listed below. As requested there is also a 6-rounds no drop, 5-rounds 1-drop, and 5-rounds no drop report. This does change the results quite a bit. If you fly consistent rounds each time, drops hurt your overall position.

Philip, I'd be there but I'm in the heat of preparing for the 56th National Model Rocket Championships and I leave in just 10 days for Pueblo, CO and there is much to be done. Didn't know I had another hobby, eh?
