OCTO Copter

hey folks,

i have designed my own OCTO copter (1meter in diameter) + 3 axis camera gimbal from scratch.
and would like to share with you what i came up with

before i start i would like to note that the materials used are not the best choice, but since there was nothing available in this part of the world and shipping carbon fiber parts is not possible i had to go with aluminum and plexi glass.

i used 2cm * 2cm * 1 mm aluminum square tubes

motors are from DIY drones with 35cm wires 2836/9
each engine has a thrust of 1300g aprox

i'm using Ardumega from DIY Drones as the main controller with magnetometer + sonar
so far it has proven to be the best thing i've ever bought for this hobby. i enjoyed it so much

i bought 8 25 AMP Turnigy esc's from hobby king.

currently using 11*4.7 props but will go with the 12 later on down the road.
all well balanced

today i had the first flight and it was very good. flying characteristics were great.
can't wait to go out again and carry some more tests and finally put on a camera and have some aerial footage .

Ardu mega will be responsible for the compensation on the roll/pitch axis at the moment. later on i will upgrade it to control all three axis.

here are some pics of the project, feel free to ask me anything, your feedback is important to me. it better be a good one :P

i don't have a video yet, i should work on that and very soooooonnnn
some of the parts i already had laying around. and the aluminum parts were cut for free because my friend works in a factory.
the total price is 1,300 $
keep in mind that i pay extra shipping to lebanon + customs and airport charges on some of the items.
it should be less.
as for the camera gimbal i designed it from scratch too !!!
i had the ball bearings at home. plexi glass cutting and the sheet it self cost me around 35$
servos i already had them
gears used cost 20$ ( the package has 5 of them)
belt and other accessories were ripped out from a printer.
i think i built the cheapest OCTO and camera gimbal

ok i will surprise you on this one !!!!
wait for it waaaait for it

i still didn't make up my mind hehehehhe
i have couple of options on the table, but still i didn't choose

1- no landing gear i prepare some kind of contraption made from plastic tubes where i can land on it. disadvantage is that in case of a problem i might have to crash land on the camera gimbal !!!!

2- i improve my camera gimbal in a way that it would be the landing gear itself.
this is possible and i already have some designs in my head and i think it would actually work.

3- do like every one is doing a very huge weird looking full of circles arc that is around the camera gimbal.

which one would you choose ?

i have three seperate designs.
in which one are you interested in ?
the main frame, or the ardumega hardcase+receiver, or the camera gimbal ?

the camera gimbal is still under testing and the design is going to change a couple of times more for sure. there are weak points i will be working on changing them to make it better. and integrating the landing gear in it too. and do some more testing "hopefully it works"

it would not be good for you to work with what i have now. trust me it would be a waste of time and money for you. unless you are going to modify the design urself and test it. in that case i would suggest you start with a fresh design instead and work with it.

let me know what you think

#3

You see the problem with #1. And #2 will always jeopardize the gimbal with harder landings. It would be very heavy to make it strong enough. I think best to have a separate landing system.

you are totally right and there is a reason why everyone goes with choice #3.
but as usual i like to test and just have fun during the process. so i'm not going with #3 i will be doing #2 instead
i want to see how much abuse i can get out of it, will it stand the testing or not i don't mind breaking a couple of them during the process
i just want to prove myself wrong thats all hehehehhe but i think in the end i will go with #3 not #2 which works for 99% of all the people. but i'm from the 1% hehehehe
here is a pic of the design which is still in its first stages, the legs will be very stiff but at the bottom i will put some kind of sponge like material to cushion the landing. i had it made on my first two quads and they actually work like a charm.
so after all #2 might be possible after all
