I don't like your altitude

This morning I was admitted into the famed shed.Over copious cups of tea Richard explained how to go about glassing my canopy, and supplied me with suitable cloth.
Whilst there he took the clamps off the wing he'd been pressing.I must say I am very impressed with this and his other foam and glass constructs. Thanks again Richard,I feel quite confident now about having a go at this.
Meanwhile, back at the wing-I am considering moving the motors. The way they are mounted at the moment puts their weight right on the t/e,supported by this and the skin. The horizontal spar on the plan in post#1 is one of only 2pieces of ply in the kit.I would be happier mounting them here and using 100 mm shafts.
Another thing I need some advice on is a hook for bungee launch.Raimund says it launches well with a "weak"bungee, but doesn't give details

Stuart,

Shafts would work but you will need to watch the CoG change as a result (plus the model gets a tad heavier as well). Not that this beauty ends up nose heavy hunting for moles on the local flying grounds.

Jens,I think he's added nose weight for balance so I should be ok.On his original pic of the plane he's got fixed props, later ones show folders,so it's likely going to be a prop breaker.I may be safer going straight to folding props?
Also the full size plane had air intake blisters on the under side, just about on the cog.I could make some up with my new found glassing skills, maybe help save the props and protect the underside.
Just mulling things over.

Stuart,

I would go with the folders if you can, although they are a bit of a pain in the to balance they are safe on landing. Personally I would avoid shafts, they are bit of a hassle to make up and vibration can occur. You will also need at least bearings on the propellor end of the shafts (some would suggest a bearing on each shaft about at half length. Then the whole thing has to be balanced and then you have those niftly little folders that can also be fun to balance at times.

Keep it simple, use folders and trust the designer to know his job about the motors being at the rear of the wing. Or at least that is what I would do.

Stuart, once you pop this one into the air the folders are out of sight. True it is not scale but one of the members (Kent????) suggest to me that a thin wire might be used under the prop to keep it out of the dirt after landing. Simple and nearly invisible if the folders are too ugly for you which i can understand as they do tend to look crummy that might be a way to go.

Hi,

I am not sure why I would gimbal mount the motor?? better to securely mount it or?? Gimbal mounted the slight and inevitable imbalances can be amplified to ever more destructive levels. I had tried a soft mount for my own large Horten power-system (to reduce that nasty noise BL motors make) and saw that even though everything appeared to be straight minor imbalances caused quite a racket when I powered it up. Using a solid mount alleviated this noise and vibration which will eventually would have damaged the frame of the wing. Although I now have the normal "whining" from the BL motor there is no vibration worth noting or worrying about.

I would avoid shafts wherever possible, unless you have access to highly accurate machine tools or a great amount of luck the chances of adding an unwanted vibration are pretty good.

Just did a bit of a dry run on the top jig.I've decided to use epoxy and micro balloons as I'm not sure how strong foamed up g/g will be.
I used double sided tape to mount thin card strips to each rib.The jig assembly was then hot glued to the board.Although thin that stuff is rigid, nearly impossible to bend.
Another board will go on top of the ali section to spread the weight.
If time allows I'll get epoxy for here and the glassing tomorrow,so hopefully make some progress this week.

After a run out to a not so lhs I now have the epoxy for both the wing skins and glassing.A couple of servo extension leads were also on the list,so with the wiring tidied up I'm just about ready to put the lid on.
I need a bit of advice re the use of the micro balloons. They should only be needed at the t/e,but I have no idea how much to put in a mix of epoxy.Any advice appreciated.

Stuart, I think you should do some small experiments to make sure you know what will work for you.

That said, I think you probably need to mix in enough that the epoxy loses its tendency to run before it cures.
