What did you do with the stock tank?

I need one for my 78 GS1000

Lots of work there.. did you build a new neck or re used the old one?

The stock tank was full of rust so I cut it up and narrowed and shortened it for practice

I reused the neck tube to keep the original vin. The rest of the frame I bent up from 1 1/4" DOM tubing, except for the engine cradle, which is the only piece of original frame left.....

How about the stock seat. I have a 1980 GS1000G. It has a custom seat on it that I HATE. I will be looking for a stock seat or I will have my current seat pan recovered as stock.

Its tough to find a seat in good shape for a 32 year old bike. I will probably have to have the custom seat re-done as stock.

I like what you are doing with the frame on your bike. My GS 1000 is all stock except for the seat and paint. I also have a 1980 GS850 that I would like to strip down, and turn into a sort of old school bobber style bike. I friend of mine did that to an old Kawasaki and it turned out looking pretty sweet.

I've got a similar project. So are you fabbing all of your own parts in the shop or are you getting outside help? Such as plate cutting.

Do you use a jig for bending the pipe or is it all free hand?

Fabbing all my own parts. I gotta grinder and a hammer I free handed all my tube bends. So far I've done everything myself with my only purchased materials being the tubing and the tank. I've got a bench top lathe also that helps

That's freaking cool Alex. I thought I was the only one who attempted frame building with hand tools.

So all plate work was done with hand tools? Yikes ! As hard as I try, I can't get my plate work to look that true.

I'd like to see more of your process and progress. We have a long tradition of posting detailed build logs here on RC Groups (click here). I hope we see more from you.
