Hi guys,

So after a whloe week of building my DLG kit the day has to get this thing where its belong - to the air.

I know I still didnt upload the pictures I promesed but I will do it hopfuly this evening.

Anyway the flights was awesome!
The wind was about 8 knots I think.
I couldn't help my self to make the first launch as a DLG launch and not simple jevlin launch.
First I started with a weak throw then, when I gained some confidence I started to launch with a bit more strength.

I had about 20-25 launchs and two of them were really long, about 2-3 min.
On the longest flight I had I'm sure I caught a thermal or two because otherwise I couldn't stay airborne so much time.
I wasnt actualy circling in the themal because I couldn't recognize where it was, and also because the wind frifted me away all the time.

I dont know for sure but I think I got to about 20-25 meters high some of the launchs.

I got to go right now - more details soon.

Hey Daniel,

That Hybrid looks great, and I can't believe how fast you built it. Excellent! A three minute flight on your first day out is very good, especially with an Art Hobby DLG.

I really do fill the addiction giving it signs...

Here is the pictures of the finished hybrid I promesed plus a little question:
As you can see in the pictures, the alierons servos was not mounted properly.
I didnt cut the servo's screw mounting plats so the only thing that held the servo in place is the epoxy glued on the side of the servo, and on the last flight it failed and servo came loose.
This is where I need your help with - how to correctly fix the alierons servos in place?

Wrap the servo tightly with some masking or blue painters tape. Then mix up some 5 min epoxy and micro balloons or other filler (baking soda, sawdust) and put a dab on the back of the servo & install it in the pocket. If the servo needs to be serviced, cut the tape off the servo then remove it. Then you can clean out the remaining tape & epoxy/filler mix. The filler in the epoxy lets it break out easier.

It looks like the servos are pretty well fit to the pockets so there isn't much room to move. In that situation I would shoot some hot glue in the gaps to lock them down and call it good. The hot glue will flex a little bit and prevent the wing flex/twist of launch to break the servos loose.

Your work looks clean and good overall...you definitely have the building skill set to move into higher end DLGs when ever you feel like it.

Did you ever say what the final all-up weight was?.... or did I miss a post?

Thank you all for the advices.
Unfortunatly, I dont have micro ballons filler and hot glue gun so I used what I have got.
I looked for something that could fill up the gap that I had around the servos.
First I thought to use little balsa pieces but then I saw the foam that protected the wing inside the parcel that I recieved the kit so I gave it a shot.
Worked out great!
Put some pieces around each servo after taking your advice, and wraped the servo with masking tape, then applied 30 min epoxy (again, the only glue I have got) and close everything with the cover.

Believe me I am very curious about the weight of the plane as well as you do,
unfortunatly, as I said before I dont have scales to check it - so no, you didnt miss it.

Daniel,

Looking good. But here's what I would do:

Add more hinge tape to the bottom of the ailerons to seal the entire gap. This'll give you a better airflow especially when the ailerons are deflected.

Put a couple more layers of fiberglass on the peg and wingtip. That area can't be too strong and some more fiberglass won't add much weight.

Next time, when you cut the opening for the servos in the wing, make the pocket just big enough to put the servo in. A tight pocket will hold the servo better.

Other than that, very nice. BTW: I took my first glider to a fruit stand and asked them to weigh it for me. I got strange looks but they weighed it!

Hi guys,
I made another flight session today and it was very good.
Wind was 12knots, I got to the field at 4pm so the wind gradually weakened till I left at 6pm.

I had some long flights today one was 5 min I think and I improved my launch and my thermal skills a bit.

I felt that if I fly straight after the launch, and just staire at the wings, when I see for example the right wing suddenly rises and I turn the glider right, right then, I'm actually getting inside the thermal it self - Am I right?

What I did not succeeded to do is to stay inside the thermal after the first circle.
Maybe you can give some advices about that?

Practice! Really, I know exactly what you mean and the answer is practice. Keep reading all you can about thermal flying, fly with others, and practice on your own. I don't have anybody in my city who flies with me, but when I started going to contests and flying with other people I learned things I never would have learned on my own. Getting a feel for the boundaries of a thermal is something I still struggle with, though. I've decided that it's a life-long pursuit. When I've been flying gliders for 30 years I'll undoubtedly still be learning.

BTW, welcome to the addiction!

Nicely done. You're right about the rising wing - left to its own devices, an airplane will fly neatly around all the thermals in the area.

Once you're in a thermal, try to fly a constant bank, constant speed circle. It's difficult, you'll have to practice. But, if you can do that, then when the airplane goes up on one side of the circle, and not the other, you know the thermal is over that way. If you're not flying a constant bank, constant speed circle, the airplane will not show the thermal as clearly.

All good advice. The most important is to fly a lot and really learn the plane... every plane has it's own personality when it comes to telling you just how much lift it's in.

I'll add that if the plane is nose heavy it may not show lift well, as it will plow right through rough air, but if a nose heavy plane goes up you KNOW your in lift for sure.

On the other hand, a neutrally balanced plane is more sensitive, so you can find the smaller thermals; but beware, you may not be able to tell the difference between a small thermal and general turbulence. I you turn in and drop, it was just turbulence.

I actually try to dial my CG in for each plane based on the minimum amount of lift I can circle in... I usually start out tail heavy and work the CG forward till it only indicates when I have enough lift to circle in.
