Question
Motor for Mountain Models J3 Cub?

Hi,

I just ordered the Mountain Models J3 Cub kit and was planning to get also the GWS 2205-15T V2 motor from them but apparently that one has been out of stock for a while.

What 70-100W brushless outrunner would you recommend?

Thanks,

Shay

Motrolfly 2205-2150: http://www.subsonicplanes.com/Motrolfly_Motors.html

This would suit you just fine, with a decent size prop, if you use 2s. If you intend to use 3s just choose a lower Kv version (?1350Kv) suited to an 8" prop, which I assume is about the size the J3 would use.

Any of these with an 1100 to 2100 mah 2S will fly that plane all day long and are less expensive.

The weight on the first one is much less than shown and you would want to use a 10X5E prop.

For this motor a 9X4.7 or 9X5 would be perfect for 2S.

This one with a 9X5 or 10X4.7 prop would work very well.

I realize the 10 inch prop is not scale looking but from a flying standpoint they provide excellent thrust at low RPM for a 17 ounce model and it will climb muck quicker. Using 3S in the MM Cub is sort of a waste since it is really a slow flyer with a lot of lift.

This motor with a 10X4.7 prop would be an excellent choice.

Several of those motors are, I think, too heavy for a 17oz slow flying model (50g-58g is too much). The Motrolfly 2205 range are 28g. The Hobbypartz 2205-1500 (33g) would be fine, though.

Actually the first one is 39 grams but the web page shows it as something like 122 gm, I don't know why. I have two of these, one in a GWS Beaver running 2100 2S and a 10X5 prop. That thing will fly for an hour and has great low speed performance but enough power to handle a pretty stiff breeze.

The Chinese are notoriously bad at showing the correct specs on their motors.

Thanks! I tend to go with the motrolfly 2205-2150, as it seems very similar to the motor I was originally planning to use (GWS 2205-15T V2). I got the GWS 8x4.3 SlowFly propeller. According to their specifications, I think that one should work fine with the motrolfly 2205-2150 on a 2S lipo, right? BTW, will a Thunderbird 18 ESC work well with this motor (I already ordered that one since I was planning on using it with the GWS motor)?

Yes the Thunderbird 18 will work great. I use a GWS 2205-15 in a Pico Tigermoth with that ESC and it rocks on 2S. I would recommend the 8004 HD prop and you shoul have enough power. Remember that the MM Cub is a high lift slow flyer so adding a little extra weight will help if you encounter any wind. I use TP 1350 Lipos in the TM to up the weight just a little.
