My home made camera mount - Flamewheel test

I had been strapping my camera, a Drift HD170, onto the top of my battery and decided it was time for an improvement. My wife and friends don't care much about these things so I thought I would post the results here.

I made it out from scrap wood in the garage, foam tape and cable ties. The frame hangs from the bottom of the flamewheel by cable ties, with a strip of rubber between the carbon and wood. The platform holding the camera is strapped on in a similar fashion. Seems to be doing a great job taming the vibration. Now if I could just get a day without much wind.

And here is a 3 minute video showing it up in the air. The first minute is filmed with a Canon 7D w/ 17-55 lens with the rest being onboard footage. Thanks for watching!

My new home made landing gear / camera mount (3 min 31 sec)

Nice video! Your project gave me an idea on how to mount my GoPro and the battery underneath my Flamewheel, using wood, too.

I have been experimenting with different batteries but on this flight I am using 3S 2200mAh batteries with APC 9 x 4.7SF Props. This setup comes in at 1275 grams total weight.

As a side note, I am generally preferring 4S batteries with my flamewheel but find I must use 8" props when doing so - anything larger I get a lot of "bounce" when tring to do a smooth hover (no matter what the gains). The 9" props are working really well with 3S and the APC's seem physically stronger then the stock props.

Nice vid. I like 8" on 4s the best cus it will react to the wind better. I get my Drift HD170 today. Looks like they dropped the price most places due to the new model that just came out. I only paid $160 del w/free extended batt from B&H.

Finally some nice weather so I decided to try some still photos! I am pleased with the results given the limitations of the Drift HD170.

Wow looked like heaver to me that's almost 2.5lb, the mount looks heavy, but I guess it not.
Great job.
