Question
Kit manufacturers and plans

Hi Guys,

I seem to remember seeing a list of all the kit manufacturers somewhere. I thought it was on this forum somewhere but I cant seem to find it now. Does anyone know what Im talking about and where it can be found?

Also, where is a good place to buy plans for scratch building? I know about the vintage plans thread and have already downloaded most of them. Those are great but what if I want to purchase plans that were published a bit more recently? I did a bit of looking before I had to leave for work and wasnt coming up with much other than ebay.

Thanks,
MB

Plans from magazines

Beyond that, there are dozens of other plans companies out there. What are you looking for in particular: sport, scale, warbirds? What size?

Hi MB
Could give you links if I was on a real computer, but it sounds like you need to check out the websites of those funny things from the depths of history - model airplane magazines!

Titles?

Flying Models, Model Airplane News and the AMA's Model Aviation are big present day mags. Radio Control Modeler died out but it's plan range is still around and working well.

If you fancy a little exotica, try googling 'Traplet Publications' and 'Radio Control Models and Electronics' from England. As Traplet does 'Quiet & Electric International' and has a great column written from the US , there's a good bias there.

Happy googling!

I have used RCM plans before for scratch building
They were of very good quality.

There's a sticky over on RCU, if I could ever get on that site anymore. Their new owners seem to have done a fine job of screwing it up royally.

...wonder upon wonders, it worked!

You should post about what type of plane you are looking to build. For example, if you're looking to build a 60 size warbird, I'd point you to Top Flite if you're more comfortable with a step by step manual. If you are confident about fleshing it out yourself, I'd point you to BHPlans.com and suggest a Brian Taylor plan and a set of molded parts and laser cut wood.

These are some good plans.
Ziroli, http://www.ziroliplans.com/home_frameset.html
Meister, http://www.meister-scale.com/
Don Smith, http://www.precisioncutkits.com/plans.htm
Hostetler, http://www.hostetlersplans.com/

I have the ziroli stearman at 77"ws. Flys great like its on rails. Meister has a reputation of being easy to fly with a high lift airfoils. Never done a Don Smith or Hostetler but I sure like their selection.

Hostetler has a great selection, but I would recommend them for the experienced builder.

The designs build into beautiful models, but some things are left to the builder to devise.

In my opinion, Ziroli and Meister are a little easier to build.

Ill be looking through the suggestions more carefully as soon as I can. Im currently working on a Vic Smeed Tomboy and next in queue is a Pat Tritle DH-89 Dragon Rapide. After I get those two finished, Ill be looking for my next victim.

Those Hostetler planes look wonderful. I think I'll wait till I have more building experience to try and tackle one of those.

I suggest that you build something like the Top Flite Stinson SR-9. It's great looking, great flying, airframe. The kit has excellent step by step instructions, and will give you the basics to move on to something more complicated, like a Hostetler design. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXNW28&P=0

There is an excellent thread about it, here:
