Got the vertical set up sans the glass on either side, and got the horizontal tapped for the screws and control horn installed.

Some photos of what I did last night.
I cut the vertical to the shape of the boom, and notched the boom a couple mm to go over the forward carbon spar on the vertical. I then wrapped the end of the notch with some kevlar thread and CA just to be safe.

I can see it taking shape!

In the picture of the stab, what is that control horn made of & what are you using to glue it?

Hi Tom,

The horn is made of 2.0mm PMMA, laser cut.
It is glued with 3hr epoxy and microballoons.

Hi Thomas,
Can you give a reason to use a PMMA as a horn material over something fiber reinforced?
I have always know plexiglass and other poly carbonates to be quite brittle and easily fractured. The plexi I work with is used for commercial store fixtures and signage.

Hi Nick,

Main reason is because we don't have access to a cnc to cut CF boards at the moment, and laser does not cut through CF or FG boards. However, I have been using some 1mm horns of the same material and haven't seen one fail yet. These are 2mm, and I doubt it will fail before the servo arm fails (although that's not as brittle...).

Thank you for the clarification Thomas.
I imagine the forces on an elevator control horn are quite small without any real shock loads (In flight ). I wonder if PMMA is what CDs are made of...

Yes, i think that a bit easily fractured horn even can keep the sevor plastic gear savely.

Didn't get a heck of a whole lot done last night.
Applied FG cloth on both sides of the vertical and boom connection. I know common practice is to only use foam-safe on XPS foam, but I have a habit of using just regular super-thin CA to stick the cloth to this connection. Key is to get it to kick before it soaks into the XPS by rubbing it with a small piece of plastic, works everytime and super quick.
I would probably just use foam-safe if you have that laying around, but I don't and I'm cheap

I also installed the spring on the horizontal last night. Used 5-min epoxy to glue in 2 small lengths of toothpicks for the wire to stick into. Strong and clean.

In case you missed this earlier, the plane is rudderless, and comes with the vertical uncut. If you do build rudderless, you will need about 12 grams of noseweight.
However, I designed the vertical so you can cut a hinge at 60% of the chord, just don't cut through both kevlar skins.
If you place a second JR 285 in the nose for the vertical, you will end up only needing a couple grams of noseweight. At least, with my equipment that's the case.

-I'm actually tempted to fit all 3 of my servos in the pod and do something like the FW5... maybe in a few months when I have more toy to play with Yes... that's how roomy the nose is
