F-86 Sabre--A Feasibility Study

Recently saw a F-86 build thread in the scratch build section, and kinda pushed my button. He is using a set of Paul Thorpe plans, for the F-86. WS 53" fuse 54" - 1:8.25 scale. Would have to be scaled up for the dynamax.

It seems to have it all . Slow, fast, agile, and even graceful.

So, I know there are more than a few of you out there that have flown this bird, and was hoping you might share your thoughts on the F-86. Mark

Were you contemplating using the Dynamax? The Sabre is one of my favorites and I've done a number of them including a stringer built balsa scratch ( without prints) build.
The ones I've done have been in the 50-60 inch range. JHH and BVM.

I see the the BVM has a 63" WS and fuse is 60". About 1:7.5 scale. What is the approx. intake size?

The reason I asked is that even in the BVM there really isn't room for a Dynamax and the batteries without a whole lot of squeezing going on.

In my 52" JHH I ran a Midi on 8s and it filled the fuse, but I was able to have a rotating nose gear because the ducting is smaller. In the 63" BVM I have a Stumax 110-52 and just have room for 12s 5000's. I have a couple of smaller F-86's as well with Midi fans. Seems to be a sweet spot.

You're going to need a fuse that's about 8.5" at the center section above the wing to fit a 5" fan in there comfortably with batteries. Now I usually place my batteries at CG or oriented around the CG so that changes in weights of battery sets are negated, so that may be why I'm thinking so large.

A 50-55 inch bird is a good size. It can be built one piece or with removable wing equally well. But it's a lot easier to start with a glass fuse with any of them.

Be interesting to see what size you come up with.

I found a set of Thorp plans on E-bay, and they are on there way. Will have to resize, I think.
Then it all comes down to size/weight VS thrust. I know that my fan/motor will put out 16#+ thrust, Lee's rewind, so in that area I'm OK.

OR, I could get the plans for this: I am sure my dynamax would fit in there!

The nice thing about a scratch build is you can make it any size you want. Just change the zoom on your printer.
A 5" fan will fit in a frame as small as Zhia or JHH at about 50". It's the batteries that are the problem. That 'Lee's Wind' motor will want 11s at least I think, though maybe you could do 10s.
This will be fun to watch.

Lee rewound it to 695KV and with the tests he had , should be most capable

mark those are the plans i have. I just scaled them down for 70mm because i have no way to transport anything that big yet or i would have done the full size. After all bigger flies better. Will be following if you decide to do this. Phil
