Video: Freestyle VTPR with Le Fish Light at Merriam Crater

Here is a video from a recent Merriam Crater slope session. It was later in the afternoon; the wind had settled enough to fly my Le Fish light.

I shot the video at 60fps. Most of the video is at normal speed; however I slowed down a few spots to 50% speed... for effect.

Beautiful work Dawson. Very graceful and the slow motion effect really added to the atmosphere.

On Edit: I forgot...what is the AUW on that Le Fish?

Dawson,
Awesome vid.
Can't wait to get my LE Fish built and start practising close flying, thanks for the inspiration.

Thanks for the comments. It was a joyful afternoon of flying.

I like the slow-mo effect. I try not to over do it. The super wide angle GoPro (170) adds a certain weirdness to the video and you have to fly very close to the camera or the glider disappears. I am planning to eventually get a regular video cam for the helmet stuff.

I forgot to credit the music on the video! "By the Grace of the Sun" by Richie Havens.

Paige: Le Fish Light is 21.5 ounces (60" WS) I am really liking how she feels when fully powered up... 15 mph.

John: Yep. I use one of the stick on bases. The setup is about three pounds lighter than the old camera and counter weight.

As ususal, some awesome flying!

The slow mo stuff fits rather seamlessly and is quite enjoyable,
however, I can't get past the fish eye effect on the lens. It makes me sick to my stomach, or have an underwater feel.(May actually work for the Le Fish.)
...I'm too focused on the effect and not the sweet flying.

If you're using photoshop and premier there are a ton of filters to correct this.

Nice flying! (as always!)

Phil.
(I also found it hard to watch with the GoPro crazy bendy distortion effect & how that changes with up & down head movement)

Yea... the barrel distortion thing is too much... especially at the 170 FOV.

I will eventually get a "real" video cam for the helmet; but am also looking into an after market lens for the GP2.

This one looks interesting...

I was messing around with my GP2 last night and trying the different FOV settings. The Hero2 offers 170, 127 and 90 FOV options for both the 1080p and 720p resolution settings. The previous HD Hero has 127 and 90. I haven't played around with it much yet but I think just switching to 127 or 90 would help with a lot of this?

I should add: I am not a photographer.

The Hero2 seems less distorted than the first one. The slow motion blended well.

Besides your near-signature tick-tock I really enjoyed the barrel rolls in which the plane "walked" to the left or right instead of staying about it's own axis (right around 3:05) very close to the ground. There was something anthropomorphic about that "walking".
