I tried to do something like that, only I used a catapult rubber band launch. This paralleled freeflight catapult gliders. I had the catapult stick attached to my TX. I had a hard time holding the TX at arms length above my head while pulling the rubberband back. the glider wighed too much for the rubber band launch.

I recently went to a National Freeflight conetst in Lost Hills CA and saw a bunch of TLG and catapult gliders. Very intersting and quite applicable here. Personally, the plane looks a bit heavy for its size and the wing is old style as compared to current FF trends.

However, this experimentation is GREAT. I really like the effort and thought that went into the design. One big advanatge is that because of its size, you can travel with them better, and building takes less space.

Very cool.

I think its kind of neat but also think the performance of the small stuff really suffers. The ideal days that they do well in are that much less frequent than for larger models.

I built about 4 apogee`s and never found them to perform very well. [thats why I built 4. lol]

I think I would rather move to someplace less windy

LOL

On a more serious note, it seems to be the perfect idea to get the DLG bug satisfied over a lunch break or when away on a trip and a full size just won't fit.

Did you build 4 Apogees from the plans, or one of the kits?

4 bagged clones. I did a two ch even to keep the weights down. I just never liked them much . Its not that they didnt fly well ,its more about how much better the 1.5 is.

if you look into Yasu's other blog posts, you will see he and others in japan can get right up there with these little gliders. one of his older ones he was getting 147ft launches with, thats better than i've seen some "normal sized" dlg's get.
just like the large ones, its a balance between drag, weight and wing performance as to how well or not so well the plane performs.
on my thrown together 24" dlg i have ridden a few cold air thermals, if it had been built properly, it would do even better. hence why my next model is built after Yasu's and others direction, it should be a hoot

600mm dlg class

Hi out there from RCbobcat55@yahoo.com. I find the 600 mm class very interesting-especially since I have a foam cutting machine and can change airfoils and outlines quickly. I have built many hlg chuck type gliders-most from all balsa and ranging in size from 9" to 24" in span and have lost many of them in thermals under all conditions. I have a bug that I have flown all across the country on trips from Phoenix AZ to The outer banks in NC as well as the Wright Brothers monument,Kill Devil hills, and the very field where the Wright Brothers did a lot of test flying. There is a lot of advantage to having something sitting in your back seat to fly at will when coming home from work and a hillside or empty lot is calling your name. I have over 30 years experience in drafting and design-mostly by hand on the board and am willing to draw up any plans for anyone who wants them for a stipend as I am not in the hobby to make money but because I enjoy it. My e-mail is RCbobcat55@yahoo.com look me up under Dyne-O-Mite sal glider on Rc Groups Later and Good Lift Bob M.
