Post your ALES setup

I am looking forward to seeing the information explosion continue for ALES. One area that has been intermingled with the all the other good information has been a listing of the planes/power sets that people are bringing to the format.

Please share with us your ALES darlings and your thoughts on what you will do next.

I am very close to buying a dedicated ALES setup, but as of yet, have not done so. Our local guys will get more active in the warmer months - right after the spring wind season blows past. I have 45 days to go (more or LESS)

I have an old OLY II that will work for those light lift days, albeit without glide path control.

I have a 2m R/E glass ship from the early 90's called the Palio Jr, again without glide path control.

I have a heavier 1.98m ship with R/E/A/A which uses spoilerons for glidepath. It does not thermal as well - but with roll control and the extra weight it is better suited to those rough air days.

My intended ALES setup is something like the PASSER X or the Advance Version of R2 Hobbies Raptor 2000.

The Phoenix II from Hobby People may just follow me home as well.

Yippee!!! I was waiting for this new forum. Very interested in any mods.
We are a group of 5 glider fliers and will have ALES informal contests starting this summer and see if we can make it grow in Ontario. We have CAM units on order.
For my planes, I have currently Radian modified similar to Paul Naton's setup. Threw away the motor ( bad bearings) and replaced it with E-flite 480 960kv ( happen to have a couple ), aluminum adapter and original spinner and Graupner 10/8 prop. Climb is better and saves an 1 or 2 oz of the glider weight with 1300ma 40c lipo.
My second plane for more windy conditions is my old Easy Glider Pro which, with added weight, penetrates much better then Radian. It is powered by, again E-Flite 480 960kv with Radian spinner and the same 10/8 Graupner prop. I modified this one a lot, it has full flying tail with HS65 MG right in the tail under the stab. I have added flaps to get full house glider, with camber set at couple of deg negative it really penetrates well. Total weight was kept to 36oz ( have another 10oz to add if needed ) with 1300ma lipo and it'd dead air time is very close to the RE Radian, it has the most development potential in a 2m foamy for me. Had a Radian Pro, did not like it in comparison, sold it.
I have 100" Aquila, which I am also converting to electric and a couple of 3.5m gliders waiting conversion.

Hi Curtis, Just completed my Skybench Oly II. I am hoping that the spoilers will help improve my landing scores.I have a Turnigy 3548 in it which is also 1450 Kv. I have another Turnigy only 900 Kv, which I may switch to. I am also awaiting the arrival of some Nano lipos? 1300 45/90C.
Should save a little weight.The weather here is wet and cool, too soon to enjoy a little soaring for this old guy. The old bones need some sunshine! Ken G.

Oly II built from an Airtronics kit about 30 years ago. I built an Electric fuse to go with the wings last season.

Photo is from before upgrading motor, prop and battery. It was originally only reaching 150m in 30 seconds. It now climbs to 200m in about 24 seconds.

Futaba 617 rx, Hitec 65/56 servos, Ultracote Lite covering. I'm using a Futaba 8FG with the motor on a 3 position switch (off-1/2-full throttle) and the spoiler on the left stick.

The only mod made was to cover the balsa bottom from the firewall to hatch with 1/64 ply for landing protection since the kit landing gear was not used.

From a power system standpoint a smaller/lighter lipo would work but due to the hatch location said lipo couldn't balance the plane. With the 2100 lipo I'm able to take 1 battery to the field and get multiple flights.

Primary is a 2m Pegasus/eflite450/13x6 rudi/ 3s 900mah 45c Hyperion / hs65mg flaps / hs65 ail,el,rud / futaba 10c tx

Backup is a bone stock Eflite Ascent.

Art Hobby Castor in the works. I'm thinking this will be my 'windy condition' plane. Planning on Hyperion motor, castle esc, spektrum servos, Hyperion battery.
