[EFLT] Tequila Sunrise

This message from JKC0943@aol.com brought to you by EFLIGHT!

Has anyone converted a 25 size Tequila Sunrise from glow to electric? What
would be a good motor - battery combo for it. I would rather have too much power
than not enough?
Thanks in advance for any help I can get.

I've flown a glow powered version, and wouldn't recommend it for
electric.
The airframe is too heavy and the wing too small/thin...

My $0.02 worth...

Unfortunately, I think the Tequila Sunrise 25 is far too heavy to make a good electric. Even as glow its already heavy for its size, and as an electric, even with LiPos, itll be around .5lb heavier.

Most 25 ARFs built today are much better suited conversions because they are built lighter and generally a tad larger.

If you do decide to convert anyway, an 8-10 cell (or 3s LiPos) set up will be the way go. Something like the Aveox 27/26 series motors, Mega 22/20/2 or 3 or a Hacker B40/C40 motor geared would all work quite well. Id suggest gearing them 4:1 or up to 6:1 on 10 cells. Power would be like that of a good 25-40 engine, but it would still be heavier than glow by .5lb on LiPos or almost 1 full pound on NiCad/NiMh sub Cs.

Its a good idea to download Motocalc and run some numbers to find what you like:

Good luck!

Jason

Thanks for the thoughts Jason. I did check and found that if I can keep it
about 59 oz, it should fly. The plane was crashed by its previous owner before I
got it, and I have cleaned the inside of the fuse pretty good. However its
still a bit too hevy with the heavy tail feathers and fin on the bottom.. The
wing seems a little too heavy also.
Thanks for your reply.
Oh BTW I was thinking of using a Astro 15, with 12 cells. what do you think.

You might consider a 75mhz radio for the 'Sunrise. It would save a little
weight. (but not enough)

At about 7 grams the Berg4 is about as good as it gets on 72 MHz.

Why would a surface use only radio be lighter than a legal aircraft radio?

Rob:

Sadly--I have to agree with you. It will be a car with wings. And it must be
one of those Chevy "rock" things they talk about on TV.

A quick check shows a wing loading of somewhere between 25 and 30 ounces per
sq.ft. on a tiny little wing whose Reynolds's Number must be appalling.

I am quickly learning that once one gets past the novelty and ease of use,
electric airplanes are like any other. Sometimes we tend to get carried away
with the electric part and forget about basic aerodynamics. The old axiom of
aviation that bigger flys better still holds so very true. Has to do with
how far we push those air molecules around.

25 oz/sq.ft. on a 500 sq. in. ship would be no big deal. But on 280 sq, in.
that wing loading will be a tip stalling killer. Any little excess of
"up-elevator" and the ship goes nuts.

I would certainly advise that if one likes the design--then scale it up
about 150% and use foam as the prime construction medium. And for goodness
sake, give that poor airfoil some thickness to work with.

An overpriced two cents worth ...
Best wishes

Hello All - this is the kind of honesty I was hoping for. My thanks to all
that gave their 2 cents on the Tequila Sunrise. I am positive you have saved me
time - money and frustration. It's a cute airplane, but not that cute.
Thank You all again
