On second thought, can you come down to Palo Alto to pick us up for the next Shasta Aerotow?

FWIW don't discount the thermaling ability of the little Cessnas. Many years ago I idiotically left Tucson on a nice summer afternoon in a 152. Hurtled into the skies at an incredible 200 fpm and proceeded to get my brains beat out by the bumpy ride. After a few minutes of that I pulled carb heat on, dropped 10 degrees flaps pulled back the throttle and started circling. Hit climb rates of 500 to 750 fpm in killer lift. After a few minutes of smooth circles I'd level out and head north again. Did this several times. Adds a bit of time to the trip, but who cares!! Notice that I was climbing faster in the thermals than with full power!!

Ha! Same here... my buddy and I left Elko NV one hot summer day with a full load of fuel. We barely cleared the hill at the end of the runway, and slowly slogged our way past town toward a long, high ridge to the east. We never would have cleared it, but just then we got caught up in a big desert boomer, so we dropped some flap and circled and climbed to ten-thousand feet. You don't need a vario in strong lift like that-- the ROC was hitting 800-900fpm. Once in the cool high air, we jaunted over the ridge with a thousand feet to spare.

Randy, if you are ever in the vicinity of Paine Field or Harvey's, give me a holler! I'd love to see your One Fifty. It'll bring back good memories, I'm sure.

I have been working on getting my ticket in a 172. Around here we don't tend to get consistent thermals, but sometimes they are impressive. On my first "engine out" experience with my instructor he waited until I was busy with something else and pulled the throttle back and announced "You have just lost an engine, what are you going to do?".
