I just ordered the 9118 for my first RC Heli

The problem I'm having is the rudder control does not do anything. I can use the trim dial to turn the heli but I get no response from the joystick. I did check to make sure all the connections were secure. I am assuming this is defective but before I send it back is there something else I should look at?

Yes, I'd guess something is not working in the Transmitter. You probably should video record what your heli is not doing right, then send the video as an attachment to an email to the place where you bought the heli, see what they say about getting it fixed.

Thanks for the reply. I thought it was most likely the transmitter, too bad but I guess someone had to get the dud.

I ordered a new one from Amazon and already got the return auth. for this one. This is a nice unit for a first heli, very forgiving and easy to fly. I'm sure it won't be long before I want to move up.

I received the new 9118 today and it flies like it should, the first one was bad out of the box. Now that I have a working unit, I'll start some of the listed mods after a few flights.

I'm flying in an empty parking garage with seems to perfect except it's only about 25 feet high, still not bad.

I can tell right away that I'm going to need the bigger battery

Has anyone already moved on to a FP?

Glad your heli is working. I'm still flying mine stock out of the box. I like the way it flies so much, I don't want to mess with it. Don't believe anyone who says you can fly this outside. Well, I should say don't fly outside unless the air is so dead calm even dandelion fluff doesn't drift. I might try a true four channel next, but don't know yet. I'm definitely putting a bigger battery in my 9118 right after I get a better charger.

I agree, it seems quite under powered, I guess that’s a good thing for a first heli. But I would think that a little breeze would really have it’s way with it. The parking garage works out great for me. I’m hoping that the tail motor and blade will help speed it up a little, it’s pretty slow.

If anyone is having real problems pushing the pivot pin out of the Rotor head - purchase a 'Pointer extractor' or else visit your friendly clockmaker/instrument mechanic and borrow one.. Just like a scaled down valve spring compressor (that we all used to use on our car engines).

You can get larger capacity Batteries from: rccontrolfreak.co.uk but make sure you add heat sinks to the Power Transistors/FET's if you are not going to give circuit boards etc. time to cool! Flight times self restrict by Battery run-down and thus prevent overheating on standard battery.

Thanks for that! Is that heat sink mod detailed somewhere? Right now I'm using two batteries and I would hope that the pcb would cool enough in the time it takes for the change over.

I just cut some copper 'shim' (.015" guage) - any metal shim will work; approx half an inch wide by an inch long. sat them against the case tags on the transistors and marked through to make holes to take 6BA bolts and nuts. bolt them (using transistor heatsink compound - it's just an aid to heat transfer) on so they sit vertical and don't touch each other. All this does is increase the effective cooling surface area of the tranny's - You can buy heat sinks for the transistor 'cans' but I just used what was to hand. You can also cut slots into the head cover either side of the bottom securing screw and bend down a 1/4" flap to aid airflow - But this is probably not effective at the low forward speeds of these helicopters.
Just a thought - has anybody cut out the fake window to give plenty of cooling access?
I reckon the two battery swap you already do is really the best idea though...

Put the Control Box face down, take out the four (larger) self-tapping screws that hold case body together. take out the two (smaller) self-tapping screws that hold the case handle together. Check the Potentiometer that controls Yaw is actually turning when the stick is operated. Best to put an ohmeter between the 'pot centre connection to one of the track end connectors - you should see the resistance vary as the stick is moved. Check All connector plugs - Oh yes: do all this with the baterry pack taken out of the controller!

Thanks but too late, I already sent it back and got a working replacement. Since out of the box it didn't work I thought sending it back was best.

9118

I just got the 9118 as a present and noticed its hard to make it go forward. When i press the right stick forward should this make the tail fan spin? Because if so then it is faulty
