Had a near Lipo fire in the basement today while charging packs for Zarks FunFly.
Had two 4S 4000's plugged in to the iCharger via the Paraboard and the PPoles harness. Added the third pack and then noticed the connection got an orange glow down in the paraboard JST socket, then lots of smoke and the balance wires were melting and orange flame appeared on them in the middle. All the wires were melting and shorting together.
Had about a 4 ft long by 2ft high cloud of smoke and my head was right in the middle of it, inhaled some for sure. Fortunately it wasn't the Lipo smoke, just burning and melting plastic.
I grabbed the Balance connector quickly below the flame and jerked if from the board. Got the PPole off so it was isolated. Batt was not hot. Flame went out.
Grabbed my Auto Bulb Discharger adaptor rig and ran upstairs out to the porch. Grabbed a 50 Cal Ammo box on the way. Set it up on the edge of the patio and closed the lid with the bulb hanging out. It took 45 minutes before it dimmed. The pack puffed some, but had prevented the pack from igniting by getting it off the Paraboard. Suspecting there was a short under that Balance Port.
The Paraboard has a lifted copper trac and melted board around the first two connectors. I still charged with it all afternoon, but not near those two ports. It stinks bad like burnt electronics always do.
Ordered a new 40A Paraboard from EP Buddy tonight. The Std. one was only 20A. Down to only two 4S 4000's now, but it is end of season so not that big of deal right now.
