Non Shrinking Dope

Hello,
Can someone answer a dumb question for me? What is non shrinking dope? And where can you get it? I am building some hand launched balsa free flight gliders, and the plans call for you to apply 3 coats of non shrinking dope. If there is something better to use, I'm open for sugestions. I would like to add some color to the gliders, so do you paint over the dope when you are finished?

Thanks, and Happy Flying,

Steven

Not to get into the technical stuff, dope is just paint.
If you just want to add some color, get a can of Krylon (paint)
and start spraying.

Or alternatively, dope is a fast drying cellulose lacquer which is good at sealing the grain in wood. Non-shrinking is just a prticular type of dope. It comes either clear or coloured. Be careful because coloured is a lot heavier than clear because of the added colour pigments .You should be able to get it from any decent hobby store.

IMO it's not a good idea to just use any old paint on top of otherwise untreated balsa wood. It can make a horrible mess.

Sig Nitrate Dope

Sig changed the formula on it's clear nitrate dope some time ago to be non-shrinking. The butyrate dope is still of the shrinking type.
