Floats for my SIG Rascal 110

Okay, I started posting this in the forums, but have decided to pull the info together into a build log so it's all together.

For anyone interested in building floats, here are a couple of good references:

Okay, here are the photos to date...

(I got wordy on some of the descriptions and RCG chopped them off. I think the meaning comes across. If not, feel free to ask.)

Glue is cured and I've sanded the tops again. I've now started attaching the balsa skins.

Using Tightbond III, I understand that after I'm done, I can come back with an iron and heat it up and the glue will polymerize similar to epoxy and make a really strong bond.

This is also about the only use I've found for that carton of diet Cheerwine I picked up by accident! The tape is holding down the edges, but I realized I needed weight in the middle to hold the center of the wood down.

Oh, and to make it work around the bow curve, I wet down the balsa before I started. I'm not doing the 1/4" flat on the front yet. That was to sharp of a bend, so it will be a separate piece.

Tom, I have heard the same about TiteBound III.

Those are shaping up to be some really nice floats! Any idea on the weight so far?

Not yet. I'll see if I can get a ballpark tonight.

I'm working three projects actively at the moment; Power pod for the Bird of Time, these floats, and a head transplant for the Pterodactyl. Should be a fun SEFF!

Right now, with the balsa to cover the rest, they're right at 15 ounces. Figure with the hardware they'll probably be about 20. That's about 2.5 lbs per pair. Think that's light enought to still work?

But then still need to seal the wood. So figure all up, probably still under 3 lbs.

Thar should be fine, Tom. I think an extra 3 pounds will be noticeable, but wont detract from the nature of the Rascal.

Glued on the bottom back half of my first set last night. Using watered down wood glue takes longer than I had expected. The water soaks into the wood and takes a long time to dry up and harden. At least all but the bottom fronts are flat and makes it easier to use weight to make sure I get good contact throughout. The tape tends to make the center bow away from the foam, so weight is needed to hold it flat.

Think I'll do a bunch Friday night and let them set all weekend. Should be pretty much caught up on the other two sets by Monday night.

Are you going to taper these, or will the sides be square as they are now?
