Help!
TWM 1/4 Super Cub

Good morning from Italy!

While waiting for better days to continue the building of my autogyro,
I bought the plane i was dreaming of from a while, it's a super cub 1/4 from The Wings Maker wich is a brand of The World Models.

The plane is almost to land at my home (I had to buy it in UK, I live in Italy) and in the while I feel seriously in trouble trying to choose the right engine.

First engine was the asp160ft, but it is too much expensive.
Second one would be a gas engine, but what is the right cc? I was thinking of a 26cc. Someone told me a 30cc would be better. I never had a gas engine, so I don't know...can you suggest one please?

And about servos(hitec or futaba...)? Never had a so large plane...

Thanks for the help i will receive.
Stefano

PS I will post some photoes when it'll arrive.

I Forgot to say that i will try to reproduce a bush plane, i think we should keep this in mind to chose the right engine.

High thrust would be a good thing to look at, I would get a 30cc. Great acceleration rate and easyer tuning with a gasser! Zenoah engins are great from what I have experianced

So you would go for a 30cc and have a power ratio higer than 1:1...
I thought i was the only who wanted to do this
Probably I will take a mintor 33cc as it is a real piece of art, at the same price of a dle30, italian product, and maybe a bit lighter than the other.

About servos instead, I decided for standard bearing servo for aileron and flaps and high torque for rudder and elevator.
Battery will be 2cell life. Even for the ignition (i will use a regulator).

First for Bush tires, look at DuBro inflatables. they are made up to 6" (152cm) dia. and look like the ones in your bush plane picture.

As to servos, look at Hitec's 485HB (or similar). Ball bearing, stronger than standard gears, more torque than recommended for the plane, and reasonably priced.

Engines: The minimum recommendation for the plane is a nitro .90 2 stroke or a 120 4 stroke. You are going to pay a premium for a multi cylinder engine. For a 4 stroke, consider the ASP 1.20 or 1.80. Or for a 2 stroke, consider the ASP 1.20 or a Super Tigre G2300 if you think a 90 is not enough.

For the possible expense involved, I would not consider a petrol engine as first choice for this airframe unless you first have a bit of experience with them.

Dear jj,
I was thinking about putting a dle20 into this plane.
It's rated for almost 13lb of thrust (or trust!? sorry)
Why don't you recomand it to me?! At my field there are a lot of people flying gas engine. They could help me in case I need.

About glow, I know best choise would be in the middle betwin 120 and 180 (single cylinder). But I will never pay so much to buy an OS or a Saito.

I agree with you about servos choise!
Thank you a lot!

Stefano

Iv been flying this plane for a year do not over power I put a DLE 20 in mine its perfect its off the ground in 30 feet climbs like a rocket, then I fly it at less than half throttle . This bird will fly for an hour with 14 ouncefuel tank I wouldgo that route.I did not have to add weight to the nose it balanced right on.

Couldn't agree more. I Think a 30cc would be way too much power. Cub looks good. Looking forward to more pics.

Another idea... Gas engines vibrate a lot. I prefer metal geard servos on gasoline engined aiplanes.

I will go for DLE20 (Yes, i also think 30cc will be too much power for this cub) an Hs485hb.
Do you guys think i should look for some metal geared servos?
What is similar to hs485 but metal geared? Got an HS 625mg for the rudder...i think it's too much for ailerons and flaps.

I'm going to post some photos in te noon may be

It really comes down to what you want to do with the model, for nearly the same money you can have 33% more power for say something like glider towing...... if you wish but you also have this thing called a throttle and as to the weight, your going to need it to balance your cub! As to servos, this is not a very big plane any good 3.5kg servo will be fine.

Go for the Asp 120 four stroke. With a 16x6 prop it will give you nice thrust and it will flie verry scalelike. The Sounds is just awesome.

I have this engine in my clipped cub 1/4 and it is a true winner! Cheap also! Order it from China, and you will be a happy man!
