DX7S vs. DX8

I want a new transmitter and am behind the times when it comes to features and specs. Trying to decide between the DX7S and DX8...for helicopter use only, I don't need any receivers, don't need telemetry (but would be nice to have the option at a later date), want optimal performance but don't need extra bells and whistles. Also prefer to spend less. From what I gather, the DX7S will be enough for me. Is there any reason to go with the DX8? Assuming the DX7S is what I need, anyone know who sells the tx alone?

Thanks!
Scot

If you are flying aerobatic helis, you want the DX8. It provides for different expo and D/R curves on either side of neutral (DX7s is symmetric). I think the gyro and governor options on the DX8 are a little better too.

And with a member looking for a backlight kit for his DX7s I think getting the DX8 and selling off the extras you don't need may put you ahead in the log run.

I read somewhere that the DX7S has only 2 flight modes...is that true? Normal and idle up 1 only?

I don't need a backlit display and can't see why you'd need dual rate/expo different on either side of center?

How are the gyro and governor features better on the DX8?

Hey Wrend,

Yup, that would probably be a nice feature but don't need that for a helicopter. Don't you have an 8FG? I have one for also. I just need the Spektrum for the bind & fly stuff and a couple of helicopters with Spektrum/Microbeast.

I'm almost to the point trying to see if I can just get away with a DX6.

DX6 won't work with BNFs as the DX6 is DSM only while BNFs are DSM2 (for now). A DX6i will work with the BNFs unless you plan on having more than 10 - the amount of model memory in the DX6i.

Can you get signal integrity info directly off the DX8 and it's included rx and telemetry module or do you need to use the Flight Log?

Are the sticks compatible with JR type aftermarket tips? I don't think I'd care for the hex shaped sticks on the DX8.

You don't need to use a Flight Log. The TM1000 plugs into the jack that the Flight Log goes into.

The DX7s/DX8 sticks use the same threads as another Japanese radio company.

I do not like the helo programing on the DX6i, I've never gotten the gyro menu to work as I want. No issues withe older DX-7 or 9503 or any of the Futaba radios.

Test a DX-8 in your hands. I did not like the feel.

Where do you read the info? Right on the tx display? Sorry for the dumb questions...no idea how this stuff works.

Another Japanese Radio company?

Hey Evan,
Yeah, I have a feeling I will agree with you...I don't care for rubberized stuff like that but, if I can convince myself I need a new tx, I would be willing to live with an uncomfortable feel. It will bother me but I'll get used to it.

Futaba?

So can you see lost frame data, etc. right on the DX8 in real time?

The DX8 shows flight log data in real time. That's what telemetry does for you.
