Futaba FASST. Vs Futaba FHSS

Futaba has 2 incompatible 2.4 systems, FASST and FHSS.

Can someone explain the difference other than the price of the receivers?

FASST has an excellent reputation for solid links and reliability. What is the reputation of their FHSS system?.

Are the FHSS short range systems?

It looks like FHSS is also limited to their modules or their low end radios. Will the 8FG, 10C work with FHSS?.

If I want to use both with my Futaba 9C Super I need two modules. I have a FASST module. Should I get a FHSS module too so I can use these lower cost receivers?

I am a bit confused. Your help is appreciated

FHSS is Futaba’s low cost system for short range park fliers. FASST receivers with dual antennas have full range (3 miles +). There are also some single antenna FASST receivers which are short range for park fliers. FASST has Sbus capability.

Personally I think that buying a Futaba FHSS system is a waist of money.

Futaba has full range S-FHSS receivers with dual antennas, and Futaba is releasing a dual antenna 8 channel sbus S-FHSS receiver this year, the R2008SB.

FHSS is probably just as reliable as FASST, and its here to stay for a long time, even the ultra high end 18MZ has FHSS/S-FHSS compatibility. And Futaba is about to release a mid end S-FHSS radio, the 8J.

I expect more Futaba transmitters to be released with dual capability, including the telemetry option, how far down the range it will go and when remains to be seen.
It will be interesting to see if the likes of FRSky will offer after-market compatible variants of the receivers to match.

has anyone seen tests on the FHSS stuff for range and strength of link in a noisy environment?

I would predict that FASST will be discontinued this year.

There will definately be some orphaned systems as time goes on-
The orphans will work -within their design limits ( receiver compatibility.)
Those who are looking at future sysems will likely see that the prices for really up to date systems will continue to be LESS rather than more money-
Why? there are simply more , advanced components available which do more and are quite inexpensive.
Most radios we use in RC, will use similar (or same) chips and ICs.
Spending a lot of money does not insure a better rf link.
From what I have seen- even the very inexpensive radios work very well (rf link).
Features - another story.
Anyone who designs around chips which are not in wide use -is likely to regret the choice.

It will be upgraded with telemetry capability. For most FASST transmitters you will only need a free firmware upgrade. There is a list in another thread.

I donít think that FHSS is upgradable to telemetry but I am not 100% sure about that.

aeajr,
Less than a month to go until the WRAM show. Futaba is supposed to be there this year, though the exhibitors list only shows Great Planes. Hopefully they'll be able to give us some more info on the S-FHSS status for radios such as the 8FG.

Here is a picture of the free firmware upgrade.

Actually, it may need an update to use FASSTest.

If you believe some people here, it uses a somewhat different signal type than FASST.

On the other hand, maybe it just uses an add on telemetry transmitter box on the model.

We'll see. I'm not sweating it.

Actually we will be getting a firmware upgrade for the FASSTest protocol and for the S-FHSS protocol.
Telemetry box..... Hey, at least Futaba is not leaving us behind, they are giving us a choice.

No, your TX is then still FASST and not FASSTest compatible. Therefore need you then not a FASSTest RX but rather an incompatibel FASST/FASSTest hybrid RX. That can other producers better. But Futabas user are to be tough.

I assume that it will just be a transmitter menu option to select between the three FASST modes and the FASSest telemetry mode so all the old receivers will still be compatible. Thatís the only logical way to do it.

I really donít see how FHSS would sit in that scheme.
