Poll
Vote for the new ALES FORUM

Please vote yes or no on the creation of this new forum.

Proposal:
Forum Name:
Altitude Limited Electric Soaring
Category:
Aircraft - Aircraft Sailplanes

Description:
For electric powered sailplanes which use an altitude limited motor cut-off

Justification:

ALES is a format which focuses on providing a limited altitude thereby allowing all airplanes of this type to compete without depending upon launching skills. It is a format which is rapidly growing and is now a separate event at the AMA nationals, as well as being flown in numerous contests across the US, Europe and numerous locations around the world. The ALES format appeals to a wide variety of flying skills, and is particularly appealing to new flyers of gliders.

Current threads are scattered throughout the the Soaring section and make it difficult to communicate among interested flyers. A single thread, has already had nearly 95,000 views.

I voted on the poll, and posted. Nothing says you can't do both.

NO.

The forums are fragmented enough already. ALES threads can just go with the rest of Electric Sailplanes threads. Fragmenting forums destroys the community. For example, people who fly Radians outside competitions don't get exposed to discussions about competitions sailplanes and about competitions. This makes Radian fliers less likely to take the next step.

Creating elite groups (on-line or in clubs) prevents the natural progress of non-experts into the expert ranks. The elite group eventually shrinks and dies!

I see EricSoar's point, but have to disagree. Elitism is a disease suffered by many in the RC community, and ALES is a format that by it's nature counters that elitism. I belong to a sailplane club dominated by aggressively competitive pilots with uber-expensive sailplanes who regard anything with a motor as beneath their consideration. One member even said to me that EP, and especially foamies are "not true sailplanes". Why would you want to subject beginners to that kind of attitude?
IMHO elitism widely exisits in RC to begin with, especially in soaring, on that point I agree. Yes, a few of the experts have now come over from the Thermal Forum and have begun to participate in ALES, but very few beginners participate on that forum anyway, unless they can afford an expensive mouldie. An ALES Forum will do more to promote soaring among the newbies than any of the existing forums do now, as it is by it's format more accessible to them.
