Funbuild 5: 59" foam Grumman Goose

I drew this up almost 2 years ago but home remodeling and kids put it on the back burner. I guess this is the perfect excuse to start building it.
I'm going to go with the 1/10th scale size, wingspan 58.8" and length 47.4". Made from 1/2" pink foam and 1/4" FFF. I might deviate from the plans here and there as I want to try a few different methods for building up wings and covering the foam.
Power will be from 2 DAT750 motors turning 11x6x3 props on 3S 2200mah-3300mah. Should make about 35oz of thrust each or 70oz total. This is my first twin, but I want to try differential steering for water taxiing.

Actual AUW is between 74-77oz depending on battery, but it obviously has no problems at this weight as I can ROW at 2/3 throttle and maintain a level cruise at 1/2 throttle.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how you tackle this one.
Funny thing, flying boats and amphibs never really did it for me, but as I've watched a couple come together here on RCGroups, I'm warming to them. The Goose definitely has the cool factor going for it...

Finally got started on it last night. I made really good progress in about 3 hours work. I have the fuselage box completely built and just need to add the V-bottom triangles and hull sheeting. Everything went together pretty well except I needed to do some light trimming/sanding and a little heating to pull the nose together. This 1/2" foam doesn't bend very easily so I had to "convince" it. A small deviation from my plans is that I built the wing saddle area up as part of the fuselage box and will hotwire out the wing saddle afterwards so I have a perfect fit. Next step will be to carve the nose-block from a single large chunk of foam, then build the cockpit/canopy. Couldn't be happier how easily this is going together. I'll post some pics tonight.
P.S. - this thing is HUGE! I could easily fit the neighbor's cat inside...

I have not decided whether I want to do the retracting floats or static floats yet... I guess it depends on which paint scheme I choose and what is appropriate for that era. I definitely won't be doing the retracting wheels "yet". I just want to make sure it flies before I go through all the trouble.

Float retracts would be very easy just using a pair of mini retracts. Servo-less retracts would make the job even easier. Wheel retracts are definitely do-able... just more complicated than I want to spend time on before I find out if the plane even flies well. If the maiden is good, I can easily retrofit wheel retracts... though the retractable tailwheel might be hard to get to without opening up the turtle deck. I plan to fly this off water most of the time though, so I can't justify the added weight, servo load, and complication other than just as a technical challenge. So maybe after the maiden... if all goes well.
