That is a cool tool! What is the width it will take and where can it be purchased?

I second that, a very cool way to make a perfect join. I'll have to try to find one for myself!

RETRACTS

I wondered if anyone had seen Sierra Retracts used on a small TF P-47 like mine? The sets shown in the link include one for the KMP P-47 in 1/7 scale. The TF is more like 1/8, but the wing spans are comparable....wonder if they would work?

Luft,

I don't know how close the KMP gear are to being the right size for the TF Jug but I can assure you that you will not find better quality anywhere. Sierra products are absolutely top notch. I'm sure Darrell would be willing to shorten the struts for you if they are too long for your airplane. Doesn't hurt to ask anyway! Just one word of warning, Darrell can be very slow with custom work! Get your order in early if you decide to go with his gear in your Jug.

Thanks Chad...I'll look in to them.

Well, after several DAYS tinkering w/ the !@#$ tail section I finally have it dry fitted to my satisfaction. I must say, TF could have done a better job engineering this portion of the kit. It looks good when complete, but is a bear to get trimmed and aligned properly.

I also got my mega shipment from Tower Hobby, so can really get after it now. I will need to finish the hinges, etc before gluing the tail in place permanently

Have caught a few hours here and there, and the horizontal stab hinging is taking shape. I've also rounded the profile of the elevators. Still need to work the hinge and TE covers. I've opted for 1/8th Robart hinge points.

Very neat work. Makes me want to start a new build! Very exciting stage when things start to take shape.

Thanks Gree! I had a lot of building lessons learned on my first effort, which must hold some kind of record for length of build! (35 years)

First and foremost; use the right tools and let them do the work! Especially true when it comes to sanding (I tend to over sand things). Wood is actually a quite forgiving medium.

On the P-47...I'm really debating the inset TE covers. It seems a bit silly to inset such large pieces of wood to achieve a tiny over hang. I'm considering an edging of very small square balsa stock on the top and bottom of the TE. I think it would be much easier to apply and shape, and would achieve the same effect. The glassing would also make it quite strong.

I use triangle stock, instead of square. I only do the top TE, or both sides on the rudder.

The triangle stock allows a tighter tolerance.

Slightly off topic. You mentioned you were considering a pull pull setup for the rudder. It can be done as you can see here. Very scale too, it worked for the real one!

Got the scale hinge blocks installed on one horizontal stab surface. The blocks are formed from solid balsa stock and firmly glued w/ CA. The rounded profile is needed to get the right rotation. I'm pretty happy w/ them and think they look accurate.

Thanks! ...For the guys building one of these....the hinge mods have been surprisingly simple to accomplish, and make the bird much more accurate scale-wise. They also seem to give the control surface a more solid feel during movement.
