First Step - RCME model plan

Hi everybody out there !!!!

After a couple of months I have finished this plane, it was designed by Ton V Musteren and published in RCME. I have a made some small changes in the wing: the trailingedge is a 4mm balsa, the leading edge have been change and I have added some triangular gussets in every rib and cap strips. I have ue monokote for covering and I have painted the fuselage with with enamel.
I have tried to fly it yesterday but I have powerplant problems with my old spedd 400 and very old NIMH pack. Here are some photos of the finished plane with my beautiful model (my wife Ana). Iīm changing the powerplant for a brushless one and I will try again next weekend.
Any one working on this project also ?
Cheers, Paul

Paul ,

Thanks for building the model your a lucky man having two lovely models.
My model is still flying the speed 400 on a old 3S Lipo 1000mah pack.
The prop is (have to check) an e-flight apc 8x3.8 which perform not bad at all.
What is the problem with the motor I kinda think that the prop is to heavy for the speed 400.

Have you seen my vdo on RCME of the First Step.

Ton, I saw your video, the pack get loose, so a friend of mine give a lipo of 11,1 volts and 1300 mah, I was using a 8 x 4 propeller, but the engine get burned ?
I couldnīt measure the engine cosumption.
Now Iīm installing a brushless engine: EMAX CF 2812 WITH A LIPO OF 1300 MAH with a 8x4 propeller. I think that it could handle the plane, what do you think ?
Iīm not very good with electrics, most of my planes are glow powered.

Paul ,

Would make a nice motor.

Came across this data on the forum ;

Emax CF2812 brushless motor
No. Of cells 2-3x Li-Poly
KV1534
Max. efficiency 82%
Max. efficiency current 7 – 16 A (>75%)
No load current / 10 V 0,9 A
Current capacity 16 A/60 s
Internal Resistance 150 mohm
Dimensions 22x10 mm
Shaft diameter 3 mm
Weight 39 g
Model Cells KV Prop RPM Current Thrust
CF2812 3S 1534 7X6 11000 15.5A 730g/1.61lb

The prop I would use is a E-flight 8x3.8 that would make a nice combination.
Better not use a gaspower prop its mostly to heavy for e-flight.

New power set up finished:

Emax CF2812 brushless motor, lipo 3S 1300 mah, ESC 30 amp., propeller 8 x 3.8.
It seems more powerful, but the the engine is a bit hot afetr running at full throtle for several minutes (?)

Maybe the maiden will be tomorrow...cross fingers...

Thanks for the pickies looks great, no problem that the motor is a little warm when flying it will of load some so the load on the motor will lower and the motor will have it much easier, don't forget that I think that the amps will be close to 15 amps and thats already close to the max of the motor, so its not strange that is warms up when you run it full power holding static.

Have fun with the maiden.

Not a complete good flight today.
It take of "as it was on rails" but, not enough rudder and bad landing...the fuselage got broken ... no damage in wing, rudder and elevator. The powerplant seems good.
The few moments it was in the air it was very stable and wonderful !!!. I have started to repair and I must wait for another week for the tests. Sorry Ton ...It wasnīt your design...itīs only me.

Maybe better next week...

Sorry no photos.

Paul.(stil smiling...)

Paul,
Good to hear that a part of the maiden was a succes but a pitty that the landing was not all that good and ended up with damage.

How much rudder movement did you have and is there washout in the wingtip as dicribed in the article text , because that makes the turn controle better.

Good to know your still smilling that counts for me to

Looking forward to the next testflight

Congrats Paul on a successful maiden flight. The best feeling in this hobby is when your new plane goes up for the first time. Looks like a nice plane that should give good flight performance. Good luck with her.

Maybe have Ana learn to fly it too?

Repairs done.

The fuselage was broken in 3 parts and was fixed last night. I also extended the servo arm to have more rudder movement.

Thanks for your words Paul. Paul. Thatīs right working in your own model and watching flying is very nice.

Ton, yes the washout is like the plan, the problem was that I have very small rudder movement (7 mm each way), now I have 28 mm each way ...I think it will be enough ...and the elevator has 10 mm each way. What are the sugested movements ? I like to have not a brisk plane.

Cheers, Paul.

I have a great flight yesterday !!!!!

Though It was a windy day, after several flights with my glow plane (sorry electrics are not the only ones for me...), and afetr the wind solw down a bitn I decided to take First Step to the air. It was I image before the flight, a very easy plane, very stable, it goes were you put it.
I donīt have very good inflight photos but here they are then.

Thanks again Ton for designing such a good plane, for your help and to share your plane with all us..

Cheers, Paul.

Congrats Paul on the remaiden flight and great to know that you like it.

How was the flying with controles at 28mm was that enough , sorry for not comming back on this earlier but looks like all turned out well.

Did you also do some loops and stall and slow flight and if the field is smooth, do try a circle on one wheel before taking off which is good fun to do.

Thanks for building and sharing this here with us and hope you will have many many happy flights with the First Step.

Just curious what type of glow plane did you fly.

Ton, it was to windy to try some aerobatics, maybe next flight. yes the control movement seems ok, but I will probably have a better idea flying it without to much wind.

Yes I have a couple of glow planes ( a fun fly and a low winger with a .40 cubbic inches glow engine both of them, ny first rainer wit a .25 cubic inches engine,a semiscale IA-63 PAMPA airplane jet with a .049 engine in the nose, and an electric motorglider). All of my planes are scracht buid form a plan(with a lot of errors but they fly), i don`t really like to fly ARTF.
I`m working in my first electric biplane also : http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1385937 .
I would like to do scale model airplanes some day, but i donīt have the craftmanship that you ( ifoloe all of your threads) and others have.

Cheers, Paul.
