Quadcopter build for FPV and Aerial Video

GOAL - Create the best easily transportable quadcopter possible for video and fpv for under $ 1000 USD.

So I was surprised by the girlfriend for Christmas with a GoPro2 camera for our traveling and sports adventures. Decided to look at some videos and saw some really good shots from a quadcopter and have to have one. I was into real RC cars as a kid but am definitely a green eared noobie. Here i will create my thread to document the build to help others that are looking to get into quads. Just wanted to thank everyone on the forum for sharing all their knowledge with others(I really just want help). I learned all I know reading posts here at rcgroups.com

I had the following requirements when choosing a set-up

-Easy to Fly
-Can carry Go-Pro2 and video is very stable and unobstructed by quad gear
-Upgradeable
-6 minute absolute min fly time
-Stable
-Affordable (Quality but not over the top)
-Portable (need to take it with me on hikes and excursions so think backpack)

I spent about $1100 total on the gear not including the GoPr2. With all the GoPro2 gear (camera, lcd screen, extra batteries) the total bill comes to exactly $1,500.

The gear I have chosen -

Quadcopter
S-604 Quick foldable QuadCcopter frame set
RC Camera Mount Kit S-500 V2 for 330X/500X
2 x Hitec Micro Servo(HS-65MG) (for the camera control)

Controller / Receiver
TMF PRO Multicopter Controller (also known as FH-X46 Pro)
Turnigy R8B RX Receiver mode 2

Drivetrain
4 x 400S 14A 1000Kv Brushless Outrunner
4 x FlyFun-18A ESC
4 in 1 Power Connector
Multi-Power Integrated Board
8 x APC 10x4.7 props
6 x 10x4.5 props

Batteries
Zippy 3S 1100 2200, 2800, 3200 MAH

FPV
Fatshark Predator goggles with integrated head tracking
5.8 G Integrated goggles receiver
Fatshark 5.8G 100mW Transmitter
5.8G 3dBi antenna
Camera 3.5-5.5V, 60mA @ 5V (420 res)
700mAh 7.4V battery pack with RC charger leads (charged via standard RC chargers)

Transmitter

Turnigy2.4Ghz 9CH FS-TH9X-B

So I chose for the following reasons -

S-604 frame because it has a compatible camera mount and still stays light. I have heard the 60 cm frame may provide more stability than the 45cm. I can also shorten it up if needed. Shortening it up with also help with transport a little. Also it is foldable which i NEEDED.

Came with a pretty sweet package at
http://www.infinity-hobby.com/main/p...oducts_id=7737
Kit price was $400 and came with :
Frame
Landing Gear w/ camera mount (and 2 servos)
Motors
ESC
TMF PRO Multicopter Controller (FH-X46 Pro)

Motors and ESC - Came with package or I may have gone little bigger maybe?

TMF PRO Controller - Sort of by default. Was interested in the Naza and CC but CC wasn't available anywhere and not too confident in the Naza just yet. Once again this came w/ package so figured I could upgrade it later if needed.

Turnigy Transmitter - Know its not the best but has all the features i needed for great price. I have read alot of good things and if I stick with the hobby I can upgrade. Like how it supports the head movement thing to move my FPV camera when I turn my head.

Fatshark Predator APV - Basically because it was a package and looked portable. Picked it up for $300 with transmitter, receiver, camera from HobbyKing after it was out of stock all week . I know it is short distance but im using it mainly to see where my gopro2 is pointing when filming on some trips. Hoping to pull 200 meters at least though with this set-up. If i need more I can maybe try different antennas etc. http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s..._5_8G_TX_.html

I've never heard of the TMF controller, so i can't really comment. I haven't used that frame either but seems like a good choice.

I have used, and do use, the predators and the gopro live feed out. Definitely capable of about 1300 feet LOS assuming decent altitude.

GundamnitPete -

The controller is more commonly known as (FH-X46 Pro).

Are you using the kit from Fatshark with the RX bulit in? And the TX in the kit? That would be awesome if I could get even 1000 ft. I have read so many mixed reviews. Thanks

Hi,

this controller looks good for stabilization but it does not have GPS what is really good and must have feature.

I am using that kit, but with the 600mw transmitter and using the gopro live feed out as the camera, though i have flown that cam and it is good.

I get about 1000ft down low, but up high i can get about 1KM. With the stock antennas, if you are about 150 feet high, you should break 1000ft no problem.

Thanks for the info. 600mw transmitter huh . Sounds alot stronger than 100mw. Which one are you using and with what receiver?

So I will have pics up soon as well as the progress updates.

Important question though..
I was going to mount my multi-power distribution board about an .5 inches from my controller. Will this cause an issue? They are the same size with holes in the corners. I was going to get 4 nylon screws and have nylon nut, power board, nylon nut, controller, nylon nut from the frame upwards.
Want to get these mounted parts ordered so I can finish this bad boy up and get it flying!

Thanks

x468's traveler frame looks like exactly what you want. Have you bought your parts yet?

also the Naza or Hoverfly Sport controllers are proven as stable and are in the $250 price range.

Personally I am building a traveler quad around some AVroto motors, Hoverfly Pro and the X468 traveler frame.

Have not got the frame yet, but it looks great
