I was able to get mine mounted last night without having to use a rat tail file, but I did have to install them all four at once. I was able to place the motor as far forward as possible and still have about 1/4" overlap on the cowl...not sure I could get it any farther forward. My spacers ended up being 1/2" in length. Just need to do the wings (servos and connectors) and then I should be able to check the CG. Was hoping to be done with this thing aready, but I've only been able to get an hour here and there to work on it.

Ok, now that a few of you have them flying, what's the popular choice Motrolfly motor model that is working on this plane, Balancing easily and producing 1200-1300 Watts?

I'll let you know this weekend; I've got the 4315-480, almost ready to balance, just need to get the servos in the wings. Going with 2x3s2800 batteries...hoping I don't have to jam them all the way up to the firewall. Might try 2x3s3300's if I need more weight.

Since the recommended Hacker A40-10S V2 (if I remember right) weighs in at 210g/7.43oz (I think), was considering the Motrolfly 3620-750 @ 230g/8.1oz. (4S)

But I thought I read here packs having to be shoved up against the firewall and I don't want that.

So then was thinking 4315-714 @ 267g with Fiberglass X, coming out around 300g/10oz if I remember right from the Cart last night.

Just don't want to add 3oz over recommended motor weight to the airframe, especially sitting up front that far out.

Almost everyone who has built this plane (at least with the Motrofly 3620) has had to push their batteries all the way to the firewall to get it balanced at 3.75. I'm betting that the heavier motor will not be a problem and will in fact make it easier for me to balance. I'd rather add motor weight than lead to the nose. I want to be able to swap batteries without having to resort to wrist gymnastics and causing carpal tunnel. Bivens posted some pics showing a battery tray that he made that helped with swapping and securing batteries. I don't think the 3oz is going to cause problems.

I am running a Eflite Power 46 on 4S with a 15x8 prop.
I get around 1100 watts and it balances perfect.
As long as you are not wanting to go 6S it is a great setup.

+1! with my 3620 i have two ounces of lead in the nose of my plane and still have a little "wrist gymnastics" i have to do to change packs. i would much rather have motor weight. i'm kinda waiting to see how SnowDog's 4315 balances to decide if i want to sell the 3620 and upgrade. i already have more power than i need though and its already installed and ready to fly.... maybe not but who knows

What other servos are you guys using other than the hitecs? I don't really want to spend the money for them. So was wondering if there are any good, cheaper alternatives.

for this size plane, the Hitec's are about the cheapest way to go with a reliable servo...

Yeah it seems like it. I was going to go with the spektrum a5040's but they're out of stock.

Are hyperion servos any good?

Just got mine flying yesterday, put 10 packs through it and I really like this one. Here is what I put in mine and my batts are one inch back from the front of the motor box. Next time out I will pull them back a little more, maybe another 1/2'' or so then I will do some mixin.
Motrolfly 4315 700

225's in mine....and they're pretty cheap while still getting it done.....some will say they don't center as well as more expensive servos...but they're still the best bang for the buck...and I don't fly this plane straight anyway....

Around 75.
This is way more than the 46 is rated for but it has never come down hot.
I would not have considered this setup except that every flyer at the field swore the Eflite could be run way over specs without issue.
Turns out they are right.
