Let's Talk About the Top One Percent and the Top Tenth of a Percent

What is the top one percent? What do you feel should be part of that?

Is it a person that earns (as of 2011) $343 K? Or should it be a family that earns that much. There is a difference. A husband and a wife in the top 5 % would easily become part of the top 1 %. Is that fair.

In case you haven't noticed that is a very variable number and inflation is cheapening it all the time. In 2007 it was $410K.

I often hear people talking about how much others make and how bad that is and yet when it is their children......it is a different story. Wonder why that is?

Wanting something isn't bad. Coveting something that belongs to another is bad. Hunger is a great motivator, or at least it should be. If you want something, then you should work to improve yourself so you can get it. That work should be honest and should be of your labor.

Another question is what is more important in your life, making money or enjoying your life. You must find the balance that will allow you to be content. Instead of worrying about what others have, find joy in that which you have. If you want more, make yourself more valuable.

Personally, I am getting a little sick of the creep of "wantism" and "entitlementism". They are more a sickness of society and individuals than a reason for discontent. As children we are at times selfish and show it. As adults we should grow beyond that and realize the joy and satisfaction of work. Man was meant to work and not to just grow as a vegetable.

So what do you consider as the level of income at which any further income should be given to society. Then how should it be divided by those who earn less?

Just curious as to the answers.

Pretty much, but should be better defined as "anyone who has a dollar more than someone else". That's the definition of "top 1%" that Obama is going for.

So, Kenny, you are going to live; Pay your mortgage, pay your utilities and eat for $833 a month?

Mr Obama knows that number and he told us so. "At a certain point you've have made enough money." Key word certain, meaning definable.

I think our current MN governor, Mark Dayton, is one of those one percenters in terms of wealth but he didn't "make" his fortune. He, like many of the wealthy elite in our country, inherited their fortunes.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Dayton name, he is the heir to the Dayton-Hudson retailing empire, recently renamed to Target—a fortune 25 company in its own right.

The question is rhetorical; obviously in America that concept is looked upon as socialistic. Says a lot about Mr. Obama to me.

It's not rhetorical ....he said he was curious about the answers.

If it is rhetorical, the thread is dishonest.

Okay, there is NO level where the US government should force income to be forfeited to the state.

The OP is on my ignore list. I can't see what the question was other than the title of the thread.

In essence, I'm responding to the responders.

Does it make sense to have someone your ignore list if you are not going to ignore them? Just so you'll know, it is an awesome post you are missing.
