Nice Planes, John!

Six turbines! I have another nice wing that would suit that profile perfectly... The Horten H-XVIII

Kent no it was not flutter, it was the gain on the gyro on ailerons was a little too high. We immediately turned it down and it stopped. Our fault for having it too high at full speed.

I am always looking for new projects!! I am about to make another batch of engines and may make another large multi engine plane, but there are not many with 6, 8 or 10 engines.

Has the variant(original?) with 6 engines in the wing been modelled?I've searched previously and found nothing.There was a build on here a while ago which didn't come to fruition

as far as I know, there have been no flying models of the XVIII. Information on the original idea is sparse and details are inaccessible, although there are several interpretations coursing around the www. It's a huge project, and six turbines consume a lot of petrol....

How much does such a Turbine as you build them weigh? do you also build for customers? or solely for private use?

The turbines weigh 450 gm without ancillaries. At the moment I do not have reliable autostart so start with the fan like the early Lambert engines.

No I do not sell them or make them for anyone else. So far I have made 15 and have loaned one or two to some others to fly. I am making some more but when these parts are used that will be it. Making them for sale is a big commitment and I would have to maintain them. It is enough of a problem to keep what I have made all running. It was just a fun project.

Here's a short vid of my "Horten Parabola" It's actually a Sif designed 20 years ago by the great Jupp Wimmer, but I thought it had a passing resemblance to the Parabola and converted it from a thermal glider to a powered set up. Still great for thermalling, park flying and ridge soaring.

The cg is between 9 and 10" from the tip of the nose because of the brushless motor. Its 70 inch wingspan and flies great does have that dreaded dutch roll effect. i probably need to add more ballast..

I eyeballed the washout i know its not scientific but does have couple degrees..

it took me 5 tries to get it right before it flew but after that it was beautiful it was 28minutes of pure fun with a little dutch roll added because i stalled it forgot to pitch the nose down but learning the character traits of a horten

I don't want to put you to work, but if it's not too much trouble, it would add to my haystack of data if you could tell me root chord, tip chord and leading edge sweep angle. Oh yes --- and span??

I went flying with Row Nelapaty this morning. Got to see him fly his Horten.

He used a brilliant (and somewhat breathtaking) vertical heave launch. The model flies like it's on rails as long as the speed is moderate or higher. It will spin if it gets way too slow. He has spin recovery down to a science. (Whew!)

Landing was flat and speed reasonable -- no wind to speak of this morning.
