Thanks for the encouragement, it helps a lot. I wish I had more time to devote to the project but usually I sneak in a little work here and there, then throw in a quick post in the middle of the night. I work a lot and the rest of my time goes to my family. Even though there is little time left it is very important for me to sneak into the workshop as a quiet stress relief every now and again. I must say I love to build, but I cannot wait to see this F-4 fly!

I built the parting plane for the other half of the intake mold. Now after the PVA dries and I add the other sides to it, then I can make the mold.

I finished making the sides and filled it up with tooling gel. Now to let it harden a little and then some glass.

Hopefully it will fly sooner than later. I glassed the mold, now I will let it bake in the hot garage and see how the inside looks.

Dan, the good thing about posting your progress is it gives followers an appreciation of how much work is involved to make a micro composite model.

Thanks, this project is mostly about the building (even though I am looking forward to the first toss). So far I am at 10 molds with 2 inlet/exhaust plugs to go! Here is the inlet molds with just a little trimming to go.

When laying up parts do you prime the mold,paint or do you ever use your tooling jel for the first or second layer(after prime/paint)?
Or is it strictly for doing the outside layer of the molds?

This is a turning point in the project. I am going from making molds to making parts. The fuse molds are waxed with one layer of PVA. Next they get a light layer of primer. I tried just painting the molds but found the final jet to have a better finish when you prime and then paint the whole finished jet.

I had to redo the coat of PVA, it got too thick in some corners and when it dried it pulled up. I sprayed on another coat of PVA and used little strips of paper towel to sop up any excess and that worked. After that dried I put on a light layer of primer.

Do you thin your PVA and what with? I thought I read that you just poured it in and swished it about a bit?

Thanks, I used to just apply it with a soaked towel. Now I use an automotive touch up gun. It provides a glassy finish but the vertical surfaces can get too much and run so I soak up the excess with small strips of paper towel before it dries.
