Carbon F-4 Phantom 40mm

I got a good deal on a 1/32 scale F-4 and decided to line it up for the next project. Of course I had to do a quick mockup to see what it will look like. It will have one 40mm fan with split intakes and exhaust and they will be scale size. The construction will be very similar to the F-16 and will use resin infused carbon. I am very excited to get going but I first must finish my F-104 project, I need about 36 hours per day instead of 24 to finish all of the jets!

Danj31,

If you're kitting this one, I'm in. I'll take one. I have MJH's plans scaled to 15 WS, but a carbon F-4. That'll be sick. Sub

Read my F-16 and F-104 builds. This one will be the same but use all of the knowledge from those to build upon. My F-15 has been put on the back burner because I think the complexity of a twin would be a bit much right now. It will be a slow build so be patient. I am hoping to use Shapeways to make the intake and exhaust.

This is incredible, did you mold this your self or was it a kit? If kit, who makes it?

I look forward to watching it progress

I am using a plastic model to make molds and then I will make flyable jets out of the molds. I am sure that I will sell a few after I tweak it and get one going for myself. The pictures show the process of filling all of the holes and cracks to ready it for the mold. Some of the detail like antennas have to be removed just to make the molding easier.

More filling and sanding, it is starting to come together and look good. Now I am debating on priming the whole model or just spraying the PVA mold release directly on the plastic. I might experiment with one of the smaller pieces. Today was very warm out so I took the MDF and saw outside and cut some of the pieces for the parting plane. It is nice to do that outside because MDF makes TONS of nasty dust. I found some super thick particle board that is dead flat to build up the parting plane on. I wanted to use MDF as the base but it all has a slight warp to it.

They would be if they are scale. The f4 is funny many ways including a stab that appears to be an upside down undercambered airfoil. Only on the f4.....

I am going to try to reproduce the scale stab, the undercamber is from slats on the leading edge to help at slow speeds. The undercamber is up, remember tails lift down like an upside down wing. I cut off the inlets at the proper spot and started adding plugs to the big holes. Now to plug the tail and more filler.
