Don, Have you tried the Tamiya rattle cans? They work very well, and you don't need an airbrush ...

Hi Herb,
I haven't tried them but will pick some up.
Thanks for the tip on the Sharpie, I also found out that if you make a mistake or don't
like what you did, you can remove the marking with alcohol and it doesn't attack the paint
or the covering.

After landing my rocket glider in a plowed field (the only place to land) I had to do some basic repairs to the Komet that were easy to do. Finding some replacement covering was an issue and I really didnít look forward to painting the wing.
Then I found it! The Hyperion olive covering from Allerc matches the color perfectly.
Actually I believe itís the same stuff thatís already on the wings. So making a simple repair is easy to do and the covering is very easy to work with.

Good Morning Herb,
I worked on my 163 yesterday and sprayed all the clear mat.
I used Mat clear from Krylon and the results were very good, the Krylon didn't react with
the Sharpie ink or any of the other materials, vinyl markings, covering, paint. The result was
a nice mat finish. The only thing is, I wish Krylon had better spray nozzles that spray in a fan
but I guess I'll only get that in a gun or air brush. I am happy with the results.

Newest 163 pics

Hey Herb,
Here's the latest from our flying field.
I still need to do a few more things to my 163 but it's
looking better. Question, I'm having a hard time landing, what do you do?
this thing will probably fly slower than I think on landing, I keep bouncing
down the runway, did you modify the gear, they seem a bit springy.
Anyway, here are a few pics after I put on the clear coat.

Yes It will fairly slow, but you need to fly it slow high up and check the
stall point, I did that with mine and it takes some altitude to recover and
get flying again, I usually do long flat aproach as is hard to bleed of speed
as there is hardly any drag, I bring it low as possible and only flare about
2 feet of the ground, I use high rate elev. for takeoff/landing, otherwise
elevator is weak.
Look at this video 7:50-9:00 min, the takeoff was in a hurry, but landing
was good, field very rough and dry, it usually slide quite a bit on good
grass fields.

Yes it will tend to glide quite a bit, fantastic airfoil and low drag.

But I do a very wide approach, bleeding speed slowly, no yanking, and that seems to work well.

If I pull elevator on mine while off the deck it will just dump lift (both ailerons "up" act like spoilerons) and come down too quickly. So I don't do much of a flare.

I prefer to just let it glide... It seems to do very well in the turns due to the low wingloading. It is a very forgiving airframe from what I can tell.

ZRX212,

Some very nice video. Can you provide any details on the droppable dolly?

I have an old S&B Komet which is still my everyday plane. While admittedly in a different class than this, it sounds like the flight characteristics are the same.

It will fly very slow and you can turn at surprisingly low speeds with little risk as Herb noted. It is quite forgiving. But once it stalls it takes it takes quite a bit of altitude to regain control.

The dolly is just gravity drop, I enlarged the existing hole in the
fuselage gear mount holes to 1/8 in. and hardened area with thin
CA, I installed 3 ea 6/32 in. socket head bolts with smooth shaft
up so they slide out easy, heads are cut off and rounded, double
nuts and whashers clamp on gear, the holes in the gear where
sligthly enlarged, this allows me do to small adjustments in bolts
position for perfect alignment with holes in fuselage.

The alignment/support blocks were made out of balsa, they have
a plywood plate against fuselage with foam tape, the blocks have
harwood dowel in center for retaining screw, they were are also
bonded to bare alum with slow CA.

The dolly works great!!

That is very nice, thanks for posting the details I like because of its simplicity, and ruggedness.

Have you thought about two front and back short alignment pins?

This is a very nice flying model, well worth the extra work. I might do exactly what you did one of these days. If you have any more pics, please post.

In the pic in just holding gear on as plane is hanging from the ceiling,
with plane sitting on gear on the ground the side blocks are pushed
against the side of fuselage and maintains it aligned, here's a pic on
table, on my red one I installed the alum plate to reinforce area, I will
paint it soon, will post pics.
