Looks like a big one for handlaunching One mistake and the wing is done. I would consider a foam sheeted wing type instead.

When it's windy at the field I can hardly hold mine, always afraid it might just fly in my face. It's a big wing.

Red Komet #2

Progress has been slow due to my hot garage and other obligations,
fuselage is completely done, all gear installed, on this one the canopy
latch or windows did not come installed, I cheated a little and used the
canopy from red#1(slight color diff.), held on with single magnet at
top and alignment blocks on aft bottom, set up the same as red#1,
exception being I made the internal rudder linkage stronger and have
more rudder throw for knife edge flight. All"s left is wing elevon and
servo install, should be done soon.

Hey Guys,

All the Komets in this thread look spectacular !!!

I'm not being smart, just curious..... Why isn't anyone using a spinner on their 163's?

I even thought about using a folding prop on one of those spinners to make it look clean when the motor is off.

Looking forward to flight reports and video ZRX212.

Joe,
I think most of us are using the open area behind the prop for additional
cooling as well as opening up extra cooling on the bottom of the cowl.
a couple of us have discussed using folding props but not sure if any of us have
as yet. The new 163 is really RED !

Joe

For me, 2 reasons for not using a spinner, 1st it allows direct cooling to
motor and forces cooling air thru the holes in the firewall to cool esc, etc.
2nd the real one did not have a traditional spinner, more like a hub for the
air driven generator.

Red#2 has a prop nut/hub wich was made from a Highley nut wich had
the wrench flats removed in a lathe.

You really don't need a spinner for looks on this plane, performance will
kick looks , everytime.

Hey Guys,

Fair enough... I was just wondering.

You guys are running more power than I am so forced air is good,

I cut a hole for cooling, fit screen over it, and painted it so it's hard to see.

Early in this thread one of us did use a folding prop. Hadn't noticed til now. Cool. I may convert mine.

Keep up the great work and be sure to post lot of pics!!

Well no maiden this w-end, still to dam hot!! and have to work tomm
found another problem, I used Dave Brown liteflite foam wheels, no good,
they had a significant flat spot, just sitting on gear for a few minutes!!.

I use Sullivan 4" Skylite on my other one, no problems, they cost twice
as much, ordered some for red#2 today, sometimes cheap cost more!!.

I tried the gear off my green one, maybe get a chance for late test flight
tomm., no go, sliding pins don't align .

I took my spinner nut, washer and collet drive to work, had them turned
down on lathe to smaller diameter, I think it looks better.

That looks very nice !!

Yes the real one had no real spinner ... a spinner changes the looks a bit.

I would not use a magnet of the canopy, magnets work well for parkfliers.

Yes, I have been wondering about the single magnet, I'm working on
better attachment ideas, too bad the spring latch was not installed
like the other ones, did not want to butcher the fuselage installing it.

Hey Herb,
Just wanted to tell you, I flew my Hobby King 163 yesterday.
That thing is a rocket even bone stock with a 3s 2200 25-50 c battery
I think it's close to 100 mph and it just flat screams, sounds like a EDF.
The think really flys great.

Well after aprox 1.5 hrs of measuring, etc and having a extra canopy
frame(no plastic), I was able to install the latch , I used a pencil
tip grinder on my dremel and was able to cut a perfect slot on fuse, I
ued 5 min. epoxy sparingly to glue on, to keep latch operating free, it
works great, was not totally sold on magnet idea.

Ordered German flag decals for tail from Callie, $4 TMD,
the wheels arrive thurs, test flt this wend

Well after a while looking on the net finally found good pic of plane
I'm trying to replicate, even has similar spinner like mine .

Also found some sites and videos of one of the last surviving pilots!!

Dr Reinhard Opitz - Me163 pilot (32 min 37 sec)

Hi Nice

The modern PK-QL Me-163 is actually a replica of Spaete's original "red" Me-163

http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showp...&postcount=165

http://www.modellversium.de/galerie/...et-dragon.html

So you have a replica of a replica ...
